I had a look at that this morning Andy and don't we all wish that there could be objectivity especially since in a "democracy" people need reliable information in order to make informed voting decisions. Unfortunately, our media, or the bulk of it is privately owned so we get the proprietors' world view. The coverage of our domestic politics is lamentable, the Murdoch media's sole objective being to boost the LNP while denigrating progressive parties.

Unforch, as you say, not a few on here will dismiss your post out of hand as lying and deceptive, never dreaming that our MSM might be lying or passing on propaganda to them.

While I'm here I want to clarify remarks that I have made about Tradies' competence. In many ways they are the new aristocrats and a long way past the days of "Tradesmen's Entrance" plaques that can still be seen on the gates of old mansions. The least competent and, they're the majority, aren't shy about call out charges nor about quotes that rank with those of the most capable and there are, of course very capable tradesmen. I dare say that our own Nicola Tesla is one of those (the name itself suggests aspirations to excellence - A,G. Bell took credit for Tesla inventions). My Chinese carpenter did his apprenticeship over there and without power tools. It is a joy, for a bush carpenter like myself, to watch him work and to see the resourcefulness.

By contrast, the guys building my house, which has older world inclusions, have never heard of a Parliament Hinge let alone know how to fit one, and the quotes.....you don't wanna know. No wonder that the houses on the escarpment from Collaroy to Palm Beach are known as Tradie-ville.

Two things influenced my opinion of modern tradies. My brother sponsored a fella from the North of England whose first employer here gifted him the business on retirement. Within 5 years the extensive client list had deserted it and new business did not come back. The fella was plainly no good, especially when it came to waterproofing shower bases as neighbour of mine found out and never stopped telling me.

The other thing was a friend who trained as a sparky with BHP . He hated it. knew he was no good at it and was rejected for future employment by BHP at the end of the apprenticeship. He was glad to go and subsequently went on to be flight attendant with Qantas. The thought that occurred to me was that there must be scores of similar stories but having got their ticket, most of those incompetent guys would hold themselves out as tradesmen knowing that they had serious limitations. They're the ones who advertise in the local paper or on Gumtree, charging the same rates and more as do the highly skilled. I'm over them.

Happy New Year to all but tempered, of course, by the grim prospect that the next twelve months will be just more of the same - Australia kept very much in the dark and fed on bullshit by right wing media promoting a drift to war. The ongoing genocide in Gaza - can you believe 22000 palestinian deaths in revenge for what, increasingly, appears to be an Israeli death toll largely down to the indiscriminate fire from the IDF. The "babies" and other horror stories all lies. The pity is that one has to look for truth in reporting because it can't be found, and never could be, in our MSM.

Unfortunately, one of the great "truth tellers" Australian journalist John Pilger died last week in the UK. Vilified by our joke media of course, Pilger had won a raft of international journalistic awards and was a prolific film documentary maker all of which can be seen on Youtube. He was also friend and untiring supporter of Julian Assange, our other great Australian hero. It sickens me to see and hear the outrage of our media when some lunatic is arrested in China after going there to cause trouble yet so little is done by our Government to free Assange for fear of offending the US. There is no point, of course, looking to our "media" to whip up its fake outrage in Assange's case.

PS There is a revealing series of articles on Menadue about the degree of political polarisation in the US. Our fate is tied to it more's the pity and a Trump promoter owns our media. Something has to be done about that.
