  • Yep Horrie, Paddo is something else. The cost of living "crisis" having no impact whatsoever on the rich. There's a fish restaurant in Boundary Street - "Sea Cow" - a glorified chippy. Flathead and chips in a polystyrene standard carton cost $54. Packed every night.

The buns at the big 2 are no good neither are the Aldi. I don't often have them and I have no Easter tradition.

    • The Jacquie Lambie Senator has resigned from the JLN. What a surprise? You have to wonder at those among us who expect anything from rank amateurs with no idea let alone policies. The famous US cynic H.L.Menken famously quipped that the more the American people wanted someone like themselves to lead, the sooner there'd be a moron for President.

What it goes to show however, is just how much confidence in our democracy has declined. As in the US and the UK, ours is an egregious sham. People elect parties expecting that something might transform life for most citizens but they are always disappointed. Nothing changes - Corporations rule the roost, The 1% get richer, life for the ordinary punter gets more difficult, we spend billions on "defence" for the benefit of our "allies". It's broke. No wonder folks clutch at straws and will keep doing so.

      * Can you just imagine how our Western MSM would behave if Russia or China was behaving as the US and Israel are in Gaza. The hypocricy is breathtaking but most of us manage to compartmentalise. Gaza is the good guys doing bad stuff but the other lot are evil.

We delay and I check their Facebook page and they have replied to a complaining customer about the massive price increase that ingredient costs have doubled since last year. They claim they are still cheaper than other independent bakeries in Canberra if customers would like to check. So we’re having expensive gold plated hot cross buns this year. They better be worth it! I wonder what the excuse was for the ones you found in Paddington five years ago before inflation?
Actually the ones we got from Kirribilli the other day were $15 for the half dozen, the sourdough i bought was cheaper than i thought, it was $7, still though the buns were $2.50 and really nice and fluffy an the right amount of fruit and peel in them. Went for a walk over to Henson Park yesterday and walked past the Bourke St bakery which is nearby, they had them for $20 a half dozen, not sure whether that was with the holiday surcharge but we bought a half a dozen, smaller than the Kirribilli ones i get, still a nice amount of fruit in them but a lot sweeter than the others i get, still nice with a cup of tea but i prefer my Kirribilli ones.

So the Kirribilli ones were still $2 cheaper than my fancy Canberra ones lol. I didn’t try the white choc and raspberry ones but the kids said they were good. My traditional ones were really good and both types were a good size which is good given the price. So all in all very pleased with the product but whether they were worth the ridiculous price is debatable.

            • I see that Gina and Twiggy have doubled their wealth since 2020 - amazing! The minerals are ours. Norway nationalised its resources to the benefit of the population and during the Whitlam government, Rex Connor pursued the same idea but the Treasury would not countenance spending the 4 billion involved. Connor looked for private finance and that "scandal" contributed to the fall of the government. Now private individuals, one with distinct fascist tendencies, hoard the wealth that really belongs to the nation. That's what Tories do for us.

              • that mining campaign v the super profits tax was a con. no doubt mining companies should be rewarded fairly but what's under the ground belongs to the people of australia and once they're gone - that's it.

                • The News Ltd/Liberal Party coalition persist with the rubbish that October 7 justifies the murder of 30.000 Palestinian civilians. There is never any mention that Israel occupies Palestine and suppresses the Palestinian population or that the UN has endorsed the human rights principle that the occupied have a right to resist the occupier.

Murdoch has been a long time supporter of Israel in its role as a garrison state of the US but he has never shown any sympathy for Middle Easterners. In fact, along with Tony Abbott, his mastheads have consistently promoted toxic Islamophobia in this country. With the Libs, the newly found passion is arrant hypocrisy. It wasn't so long ago that the Oz establishment (aka the LNP) discriminated openly against Jews who were banned from joining influential clubs including golf clubs. During the war Jewish refugee ships were turned away from here and sent back to Germany by conservative government.

I heard a vox pop on the ABC re the Cook bi-election tomorrow, most of those interviewed didn't know it was on. What hope is there for a future where 90% of us are so disengaged, uncritical and uninterested. Is this the great democracy that Heckle and Jeckle rabbit on about?

                  • Horrendous and unimaginable as it is and was, the Bondi killings have had saturation coverage by commercial TV. The same thing over and over being milked for all it is worth. What more can be said fgs.? The man was seriously mentally ill. These people "see" things and hear voices. They're with us in greater numbers - population growth an mind bending drugs and for those so inclined there are also plenty of violent games, knives, axes and what have you. We saw it some time back at Strathfield where the mentally ill had a rifle and given our modern world environment, will surely happen again.

Meanwhile, having distracted most of the population away from the Middle East, not that most have any interest anyway, the demonisation of Iran goes on. Our media and Pollies are giving us the line that these latest rocket incursions into Israel is Iranian aggression and that Iran is provoking wider war in the region. To the masses it seems as though the the whole thing has come out of the blue. It's not ever mentioned that the Israelis destroyed the Iranian Embassy in Baghdad in a rocket attack killing 16 including high ranking military personnel. Anywhere in the world, an attack on an embassy would be an act of war. And yet we are fed propaganda by a war mongering right wing media. Heaven help us. This isn't journalism, we're supposed to get the full story in a democracy.

I have watched zero tv coverage on what happened at Bondi Junction for the reasons you mention Nor do I have any interest in hearing or seeing what MSM has to say about Iran

I was leaving it a few days before mentioning the events that have taken place with Iran and Israel but I was pretty sure you’d be in here today pointing out the blindly obvious for those with worldly street smarts or intelligence

The Iranian response to the bombing of their embassy was meak and tame almost a face saving exercise to show they have done something about it It was telegraphed and done in a way that there was plenty of time for the US and UK to assist in intercepting most of the drones Some got through hitting the base that their planes used to attack the embassy Israel propoganda of course claim they intercepted the misfiles without mentioning the assistance they had, and ever playing the victim claim a ten year old boy was killed Something I find hard to believe with their lies previous lies about babies. The Iranian response was proportional and imo had every right to respond in the manner in which they did

The worrying part is that the ball is now in the Israeli court as to what happens next
                      When you trust your television
what you get is what you got
Cause when they own the information
they can bend it all they want

                      • Right on Andy. It also diverts attention from ongoing Gaza as well. And it was disproportionate - too little response which was deliberate as you pointed out! But they know that the US would be itching to get stuck into them even more than they already are with sanctions. People don't know about the US/UK regime change in Iran in the 50s. A left oriented president was elected who led a secular republic free of Islamist influence. It was promptly toppled by Western Intelligence agencies and the Shah was installed who murdered, tortured and disappeared thousands in an attempt to diminish Islam by force. I had been a democracy and now look what the US has sown there.

Oz needs to show more independence but it won't be Albo that shows it. He knows that the cake is hardly worth the candle given the influence of right wing media.

The new line is that on October 7th Hamas murdered scores of kids at a music festival. But who knows who murdered whom in such numbers? The IDF brought in the heavy stuff at the festival site -mass destruction. We haven't had an independent investigation, we might eventually get one but by the time that the truth is known all will be lost in the unceasing 24 hour "news" cycle.

Yes, Master Bruce is none too popular. Jeez, like our war hero VC winning murderer, the costs that he faces are horrendous. I presume that News Ltd is involved in some way protecting the Libs.

                            • bruce lehrmann - take a bow. got away with rape and risked his good name for what would have been 20k damages. smart move, bruce! what a great advertisment for the political class you are!
i think the judge got it right. if higgins, as drunk as she was, had consented - or if lehrmann thought she had consented - lehrmann would have said that the sex was consensual, rather than denying sex took place. if you accept that sex did take place - which, at least on the balance of probability, seems right - then you've got to believe he raped her

                              • Agree zac the man’s arrogance brought him down. As the judge said he managed to escape the lions den but his mistake was to go back in for his hat. What about the culture of the big TV networks? They’re giving this guy money to buy cocaine and prostitutes and it doesn’t raise a single eyebrow about his character? Who cares about that when what’s important is getting a story to outdo the other network?
