  • What's your side hustle?

In my case I coach a few kids sports, teach Italian and sell retro computers / gaming gear that I've restored.

With inflation and interest rates the way they are, I find it always helps to have an extra pocket of cash coming in on top of my main salary.

How about others... what's your side hustle? Any interesting stories outta random side hustles?

Apart from your excess intake of craft beer and limoncello fogging your mind so heavily that you seem to have forgotten you have already started this very same thread a few months back

Nothing from my end has changed and in the spirit of fair play I will once again remind you that I grow and sell cannabis

As a kid, i collected golf balls from Nth Bondi, Woollahra and Royal Sydney Golf Clubs. I'd take them home, give them a clean and then sell them. I sold tens of thousands over the years via The Trading Post, school fetes, flea markets etc.

Once I could drive I would head over to the Australian Golf Club and go diving for them in the ponds. My favourite hunting ground was the 2nd hole at Nth Bondi. I'd scale down the side of the cliff on a Sunday arvo and often come back up with 100 plus golf balls. I'd then ride my bike down to the Woollahra Golf Course and hunt for more balls.

My first property was a unit in Clovelly back when it was dirt cheap. I'd estimate that atleast $10k from golf ball sales went into my deposit.

Neat, I reckon that it's great when people have a skill like that and can monetise it like that.

As a retro gaming collector. My hobby started as me buying say $300-$500 of gear while in Japan (while visiting my daughter) and then flipping it for the approximate value of my airfare. Required a bit of prior planning but I realised it was pretty easy to flip a lot of the common gear that I don't collect, but can see people swooning over online.

Time passed and I found myself with a little bit more disposable cash (plus a growing collection of my own stuff) so I started spending ~$2000 on gear and flipping it to buy some gems for myself (including after modding/restoring stuff). I've now hit a sweet spot where I can't buy/restore any more stuff as I wouldn't have the time/energy. I like being in this position as it's still a hobby. With tech, I find it gets awfully boring/repetitive if I spend my whole day with it.

From this I've got a dream though. Don't have a way of funding it but I'd like to setup some sort of a public venue where I can share my collection with others. Trouble is, the more I think of it... the more I realise that it'd probably be a royal pain in the neck expanding this hobby into a business venture as it works when my retro cave is at home (no extra rent/costs/security measures...etc) and it's for me/family/friends rather than randoms (who'll probably have unrealistic expectations about old stuff & break stuff).

Long story short, I reckon there's a sweet spot between hobby and 'job' where you can bank some decent coin without having to take on too much work.

Champion! What a great idea... glad it paid for a decent investment property too.

Neat! An online survey company offered me a small amount of money to trial a COVID vaccine. I checked it out and it was a legit researcher they referred me to, but it was a random Thai vaccine (nothing cutting edge) so I declined.

The other online offers I get are coupons from Strava when I complete challenges. Most recently I was offered a $60 a year 'sponsorship'. However, the cheapest item I could buy from the said company was ~$1000 so I haven't taken them up on it.

I’ve done some product testing as well.

Pretty boring stuff like toothpaste, washing powder, drinks, snack bars, chocolate bars etc. They get you to test them then answer a follow up survey after it.

I played junior footy for Bondi United around that same period. One of my team mates who I also went to school with was a very keen and handy fisho. His favourite fishing spot was The Murk. Back then the treated sewage would be pumped just beyond the rock shelf. It stunk and the water was brown. When the NE was strong we'd often be surfing amongst what we'd call Bondi Cigars. The Murk was a fantastic fishing spot if you could tolerate the stench. My mates hustle was selling the fish he caught down at The Murk to pubs who would then raffle them off. The Bondi Regis was one of his best clients.
