They knew the weather was coming so they had 2 options

    1. Bat on in their first innings for a lead sizeable enough to bowl Australia out and not bat again. - 275 was the lead on the first innings

    2. Declare earlier and then weather permitting chase down whatever lead Australia has obtained after their second innings if they bowled them out that is.

Option 1 was the most viable

Yes but given the amount of rain predicted to come, they could have got away with less of a lead with an increased window to take the other 5 wickets.

Option two was far more viable with the known weather forecast He who dares wins

to be fair australia was on target to get around 300 and bat for another couple of hours so the timing of the declaration probably wasn't decisive.
the rain saved us but the poms have won every toss and have had the best of the conditions throughout the series so it's not as if they haven't had their share of luck too

Spot on guvnor'. Unfortunately the rain has probably saved cummins' captaincy, for now.

Hopefully we go in with Todd Murphy tonight and win the toss for a change. Let’s win the series to stop those whinging poms claiming they’ve been ripped off.

I think Neser deserves a run too.

Yes he could do well too and has been going well with the bat of late as well. It will be interesting to see what happens. I don’t think we’ll go in with both Marsh and Green this time unless Warner is dropped which I can’t see happening. So maybe Murphy for one of the all rounders and Neser for Starc (injuries) or Hazelwood (rest).

Hope you've caught up in the cricket MR, we've had conditions to suit and pitched the ball up with much better results

Yep thank JB. I managed to get just past the tea break, then went off to bed. I love the cricket almost as much as my Roosters and the Ashes are the pinnacle. As I already knew the score at 3 for 101, I zipped through the first 90 minutes fairly quickly helping me to catch up to live. It was good to finally win the toss and do what the Poms would have not wanted us to as no doubt they would have bowled first again. I’m glad Murphy was picked this time and now they have an injury to their spin bowler. I still don’t know what to make of this Bazzball style. It reminds me too much of T20 cricket. Oh and I see again this morning another start and fail for Warner. That’s been the story of his career in England.

a good day for australia, although both teams are still in it. good to see murphy get a couple and bowl economically. rain a factor but they'll get more play than at manchester so a result is possible. we just need a draw to win the series and england will be desperate to win to maintain their moral high ground arguments. we should try and bat for the next day and a half and give them nothing

We have to try and take some of the juice out of the poms bowlers legs. Ali doesn't look like he will be bowling if he's done a groin and we can't afford to give any wickets away to Root who I assume will take up the spinning role. Hopefully we can build a first innings lead and play from in front.

Australian Batters need to pick up the runs per overs pace

                                England - 283 (54.4 Overs) - 5.17 per over

                                Australia - 115/2 ( 51.5 Overs) - 2.22 per over

Sure if you bat long you can put on a total but if fiddling around and not really scoring then lose a few wickets your going nowhere scorecard wise.

Which has happened as Australia lose 2 quick wickets

                                Now 4/127

Not saying they copy England " Bazzball" Wise but your a sitting duck if batting to survive and not scoring.

At 2.22 per over it will take Australia almost 128 overs to make 283
