  • Cummins' retirement rant

Interesting that Cummins has gone out with a bang. Just read a report where he's quoted as saying something like:

    - He told his son to ref AFL instead coz they allow you to deduct points when parents whinge

    - The technology's shyte and makes people focus on 50:50 reffing 'errors' instead of the contest & what they get right

    - Cummins doesn't feel wanted and says his lack of big game selection indicated this

Reflects his reffing IMO. Rightly or wrongly I think refs have adapted a style where they don't try to make the decision that reflects the vibe of the game, they intentionally try to make 'defensible' decisions that the bunker won't be able to overturn.

It was time for Cummins. He says refs would prefer to work at Maccas given what they cop but (not knowing what he's earned), IMO there will always be supply. People would make good coin as professional refs and I remember bagging ~$40 a game reffing basketball (after coaching games) as a uni student.

Making the leap to professional games is a different thing and I dunno how you do that really. Seeing a Badger become our first female ref sums it up to me though.

cummins didn't do us any favours over the years but he has every right to be pissed off about how the nrl made a big thing of his '6 again' correction to promote a re-match between us and the raiders. it was like the nrl saying that they don't give a **** about refs

Two of the toughest jobs in sports are being a match official and or a manager or coach.

          I’m pretty sure that’s 3 things.

He has a point. Every week the media and fans go on and on about the refs and the bunker. It only rarely gets a mention in the AFL. There was a big howler recently which denied Adelaide of a spot in the 8 but for the most part they talk about the game not the incompetent officials.

That adds up to three things.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.
