By its very nature any referendum will cause a divide....however there is absolutely nothing in the YES proposal that will cause a race division in Australia. There just isn't. I haven't heard a single concrete explanation how forming a representative committee of indigenous members with the objective of advising a government on how they should solve things concerning themselves will result in a nation split by race. Once the referendum is over then Australia will get on with it- no matter what the outcome of the referendum will be. It's what we do.
Gday Random...I've been explaining this stuff (or trying to ) at the pre polls this week so I'll give it a crack here.

Its because they want to put the Voice in the Constitution. And thats where the racial divide comes in. All Australians incl Indigenous are currently represented equally in the Constitution. This Voice gives one racial group extra additional privileges which aren't necessary and provides an imbalance in how rights are meted out in a liberal democracy.

We already have a plethora of avenues to promote and address Indigenous disadvantage. The last thing we need is another layer of bureaucracy and talk/review fest. We need ears and audits, not more voices and hands out for money.

As soon as Albo wanted to put the Voice in the Constitution, and ask people to vote on it, he has already created division. The damage has kind of been done regardless of the result tomorrow.

Whatever happens we need to come together after tomorrow and respect the will of the people. Jacinta is a rock star and I hope her ideas somehow get a platform moving forward. That will see the real issues for Indigenous people championed on the ground.

Oh, and we need a proper bloody audit to find out where those huge amounts of $$ went.

        Bravo, well said.

Suddenly confused leftards no longer believe in "EQUAL RIGHTS", and they "support the CORPORATES" who are obviously and openly supporting this. It must suck being a confused hypocritical leftard.

Yep, the aboriginal industry doesn't need a voice, it needs a audit.

I disagree with those who are saying 'I'm voting no because I want a treaty instead... they shoulda asked us in 1788 instead'. I get it but this would be a path to better representation.

Sigh. Doesn't matter anyway as the polls are right... it's not gonna happen. IMO this is a shame because it's something that the farking Morrison government started the work on (IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE BIPARTISOB!!!) and Dutton's just being a d!ck by withdrawing support & running FUD campaigns to appease the far-right. I heard Dutton on the radio today and he was all like 'blaaaah blah blah this is a massive failure by Albo and Labor... blah blah blah'. Farking potato head.

I think that's the good news. Dutton's killed this opportunity but the good work and momentum will continue regardless...

That's well explained and fair enough. As i said there are plenty of valid reasons why someone can vote NO. Im not one for bagging someone for how they vote- it's not a clear cut issue, hence the referendum.

Albo took the referendum idea to the election. It needed to happen once he became PM. He also said recently 'If Australians vote no, I don't believe it would be appropriate to then go and legislate anyway,'
He was then asked "If it’s a no vote, you walk away from the voice altogether?” and he said "correct. We will continue to do what we can to listen to indigenous Australians". I dont think you can be fairer than that

I think you said in a previous post at very worst it gets everyone addressing the issues at hand-very true

              • Voting day. I've already put mine in and it was hilarious to see how much effort the Liberal party's put into trucking in members from interstate to turn up with their (divisive) 'vote no to the voice of division' posters.

I recognised one at my local polling booth and was like 'hey [name]... good to see you, I thought you were in Brisbane these days, whatcha doing here?'

At first he denied his identity and was like 'nah... hahaha... wrong person mate... wroooong person, I'm born and bred in Canberra!'

I then went in, voted and on the way out called out his name from behind. He immediately turned around in recognition and then his voice turned angry and he was like 'what's your problem [my name?!?!?] mind your own business!!! You were always an idiot at school, nothing's changed!!! People like you shouldn't be able to vote!!!' I responded with 'mate I'd watch what you say... I'm not gonna report you but you have NFI which way I've voted and all I did was say hello because we went to school together - was gonna offer you a beer since you're in town. Thought you were better than this divisive political BS mate...'

IMO it was pretty funny. Shows he's not 100% happy holding a sign for his party either (won't name him but this guy was the media advisor for an MP in the previous government). Wouldn't surprise me if somebody like Clive Palmer's paying him to be there.

For them to be this desperate, I 'suspect' that internal polling's a lot closer than the polls we're seeing

                          • Actually I’ll take that back. I scrolled down and we’re the only state or territory with the YES vote ahead at 64%.
