One could say the same thing about a party that initially supported constitutional recognition of indigenous Australians and then ~3 months out from the referendum started campaigning against it because they saw a cheap opportunity to spoil what some might see as a 'win' for the government of the day.

As I said... indigenous Australians will eventually receive some form of constitutional recognition. However, it won't be in 2023. That doesn't mean that voting down recognition in 2023 was inherently the best decision.

Like with John Howard banning gay marriage - where did that put him when it comes to the 'right side of history'. Conservatives always delay social progression by protesting that it's immoral and will lead to all sorts of horrible things. That's politics for you! Such things ALWAYS reach a tipping point where the conservatives get told 'okay grandpa'. That day is simply not today.

Oh yeah and WTF is this 'right side of history' rhetoric anyway? I thought it was just bullshyte language that random dictators like Chairman Xi used when sayibf things like 'China will always be on the right side of history'. Thanks, Comrade. Appreciate your input... dunno what do do with it though
I was going to give you a simple one word reply of NO but like a spoilt child, the yes voters can’t accept it and are still throwing their toys out of their cots.

Oh yeah, Johnny Howard was the second longest serving Aussie PM in history. I’d say he went pretty well really.

You really need to find better analogies.

    • I dunno where you're at Rento but it's not a thinking place. We are a seriously uniformed community, the result of having a near monopoly Right Wing MSM that sets whatever agenda the boss wants. Combine that with a general population that is seriously incurious and pretty much ignorant. One needs only to look at the weekly commercial TV programing to see that.

The repetition of falsehood by media creates and "Illusory Truth Effect" (google it) where after time what is being said is accepted as truth. After every election, our Media Watch program surveys election coverage in our MSM, invariably News has several hundred positive articles on the Coalition compared to double figures for progressive parties and none for the Greens which Murdoch has proscribed - hence Howard's run and others before when Packer and Norton before him were our agenda setters.

Just out of interest, what are your faves - MKR, Bachelor, Survivor, I'm a Celeb, SAS, Farmer, MAFS? They all all add up to dumb down. In my 40+ years as an educator I saw them come from Primary school with no curiosity, they're still comin' and they vote. When I read you, I read unadulterated MSM.

You're getting so tedious you could bore an arsehole in a wooden horse. Give it up - you lost.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.

He lost his seat when sacked and most of his key policies have been rolled back and/or discredited since (e.g. refusing to say 'sorry' for the stolen generation, Work Choices, war in Iraq, no signing of Kyoto, backing nuclear power over green tech, permanent detention of Hicks, banning gay marriage...etc).

Howard's only legacy is GST (which he said he'd never do when Keating brought it to the 1996 election) and banning semi-automatic weapons (a policy that progressives backed and his rusted on voters hate).

My examples are apt as they demonstrate how conservatives always hold back social progression for stupid reasons (and can have loooong, dry stints in power like Howard did), but social progression is still inevitable for those who stick around for the long-haul.

My Souffs analogy was one of the more clever ones and you know exactly why. Keep repeating the line that 'hahaha the result was no' like a Souffs fan who's just beat us in round 1 of 2013. This ain't the last you're gonna see of progressive indigenous policies

I look forward to the next referendum on the issue.

                        • Keating's GST was a fair one because the formula factored in inflation which meant that the longer one held the capital subject to gain, the less tax was due on sale. So if you owned and ran a business for many years the inflation in value over that period was not taxable which meant that you had something to show for the years of slogging but it stymied the quick buck guys who made thousands overnight deploying capital into all sorts of things - paintings, property, shares, vintage cars etc. Previously, under Menzies, if you parlayed capital you paid no tax at all.

Again, the media sold Howard to us and the Libs' CGT gave the short term turn over guys 50% of the gain tax free and the other 50% taxed just at their marginal rate. You woulda thought that the fella with the corner shop for 30 years would never vote Tory again but oh no.. Strangely the implications were ever explained by the media. It wasn't the only thing that sunk Keating but it sure helped. Once again, the Libs rolled out the mythical mums & dads line.

                          • Here we go. Nothing to do with previous PM’s or taxes or immigration policies changes anything.

                            Its still NO!

It’s the way the woke snowflakes of today think Andy. It’s their way or no way and if you disagree, you get the honour of some new fancy term or label to make them feel better about themselves or somehow in control.
