I just want to know who had access to her thesis major that "included references to colonialism and white privilege".

All good Jack! I found Paul Murray and his thoughts on the breakdancer. Don't know what happened to Rita Putarna though-must be holidaying at Jurassic Park

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wY0EFq4WWU0

I got no idea why it is even a Olympic sport- its not even a sport. Anyhow she has become popular by default-like Eric the Eel or Eddie the Eagle.

Hey Jack did you see her fellow Aussie athletes go crazy around her at their end of games partying? She certainly won them over.....i doubt any of them knew who she was before her performance and now she has become icon of sorts. Yeah i don't get it either....but as i keep saying the worlds changing

What I find interesting is that a Japanese woman won it rather than some hardcore gangster chick from a rough country. It's big over there and people definitely setup in the streets with a ghetto blaster to do it (even in small towns).

However it's more of a cute, fun thing to be doing rather than some dangerous, underground scene. Maybe that sums up rap/hip-hop though? [Insert rant about how Snoop is an entertainer who went to a catholic school, not a gangster boss... who woulda thought].

I suspect that (like our winter olympics team), this was an event where anybody willing to self-fund and give it a crack could go along (also it wasn't really worth committing to long-term as spinning on your head's sorta dangerous and it's not a continuing event).

IMO booing and trolling people is poor form. My only real comment on that one is that she's now an olympic athlete because other dancers didn't show-up to the trials. Like it or not, that's what sport's about... showing up and putting yourself out there for selection. She's not the first or the last person who's made a team by showing up. Maybe there's a broader message about why most of our medals came from women? Something about being willing to put your hat in the ring no matter what rather than sitting back and heckling those who give it a go.

It's disappointing that breaking isn't in the next Olympics because IMO if I were an established female dancer with an interest in hip-hop, the message here would be 'the bar is pretty low, so farking turn up and give it a crack!!!' Suddenly 50-100 people do so and the quality improves through competition. Dunno why but apparently this time around, all those hip-hop dancers down at Darling Harbour and from various touring dance shows didn't get the mail that there was a very real opportunity to sneak into our olympic team if they showed up.

I have seen a couple of these pure gold gold medals in sports museums - they stopped awarding pure gold gold medals in 1912. - they would be worth £35,962 - $69,717,30 AUD in todays money

The Gold medals in Paris are worth £408.59 - $792.20 AUD for their Gold Content

I think her husband was involved.

Apparently they set up an "association". It has 15 members and Raygun was selected from the very shallow pool of talent.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.

Breaking was always going to be a one off addition - LA sees the return of Softball and Baseball - especially pertinent with baseball in Aussie Player Travis Bazzana being the number 1 MLB Draft pick this year(2024) - signed a 8.95 mill USD deal (Draft slot value they call it) AUD 13.592 Million with a playing contract with the Cleveland Guardians to be negotiated.

Back in the day at School - It was League , Cricket and Gymnastics for the Boys and Gymnastics, Netball and Softball for the Girls - The annual athletics and Swimming carnivals on top.

Then things changed a bit - Football , Rugby , AFL and Baseball came in - for the Boys - Field Hockey for the Girls

I was saying the other day to some other work colleagues that Australia plays most if not all the sports there is - of course not all at a high level and or International level. But the opportunities are there for kids to try a wide range of sports and make a career out of any of them.

It seems that rumour has been fact checked and found to be untrue.

However; it remains the truth that "Raygun" was an absolute farcical embarrassment.

I think they made a movie about Eddie the Eagle, there's been docos about Eric the Eel, there's even a quirky little movie about a hack golfer who played the British Open, but there will never be a movie made about a privileged white woman who beat insurmountable odds to represent Australia in ghetto breakdancing.

                            • I found everything about Raygun an embarrassment. She will end up making millions from her infamy but I think she should be deeply ashamed.

Meh - I have various friends who have represented Australia at the winter olympics (and various random sports such as lacrosse). It's less prominent but every winter olympics we'll have some complete random doing a farcical winter sport (generally 100% self-funded mind you) and coming last against people who live in countries where there's proper snow (and 'winter sports' at school aren't rugby and soccer - nobody's banning Jamaica from putting together a bobsled team).

She's not the first or the last person to seize an opportunity like this. Doesn't matter how hard you fail! If you make the national team because nobody else was brave enough to put their hat in the ring then faaarkin good onya!!!

It's a great story for the kids and if she didn't put her hand up, then the person who finished #2 to her woulda gone. Yes you'd hope they'd come from a gymnastics/dancing background (so possessed the strength for challenging 'poses') and had Googled a few simple breakdancing moves first (e.g. a turtle or air flares if they can't do a head spin).

However, sometimes the bar's set low because nobody else shows up to an open, competitive selection process. Stiff shyte for those who didn't put their hat in the ring because they assumed the bar would be higher.
