She's not the first or the last person to seize an opportunity like this. Doesn't matter how hard you fail! If you make the national team because nobody else was brave enough to put their hat in the ring then faaarkin good onya!!!

It's a great story for the kids and if she didn't put her hand up, then the person who finished #2 to her woulda gone. Yes you'd hope they'd come from a gymnastics/dancing background (so possessed the strength for challenging 'poses') and had Googled a few simple breakdancing moves first (e.g. a turtle or air flares if they can't do a head spin).

However, sometimes the bar's set low because nobody else shows up to an open, competitive selection process. Stiff shyte for those who didn't put their hat in the ring because they assumed the bar would be higher.
Bit like the Sudoku World Championships back in the day - Australia didn't have a national body which would hold competitions to pick an Australian squad so a few blokes formed one and became the Australian Reps at the Sudoku World Championships.

    Opportunity Knocks

Not a word about J Attack ( Jeff Dunne) performance though - he scored only 2 points over the 3 heats even though performing traditional breaking moves - Not sure how he only scored 2 - ditto with Rachael scoring 0

That is one of the problems with such sports/activities - the judges "interpretation" - Same as Diving - the judges are mesmerised by the Chinese Divers and give them near perfect scores even when they muck parts of the dive up.

Why do you feel the need to quote me? Have your opinion but I certainly do not wish to engage in any form of dialogue with the likes of you.

                Why is everybody soo unkind?!?!?

Tbh, I think a lot of it is just tongue in cheek. Then when some with less humour about them decide to be killjoys, it takes a turn and ends up getting spicy.

This is the internet. It should never ever be taken too seriously.

How’d it get hurt if it was rejected?

My understanding is that the judges used a comparative scoring model whereby you're awarded points based on how you compare with others.

I suspect that on this basis, you only get points in a loss if part of your routine was better than what your opponent did in certain aspects (say creativity, originality, connection with your country...etc).

This is unlike diving (for example) where I'd still get some sort of a score for doing a simple pindrop into the pool with a 'rip entry' on the basis that I was straight and still the whole way. Zero points for complexity and creativity but a point or 2 for execution.

My GUESS is that Ray Gunn was attempting to secure a few points for creativity, originality and connection with somebody's country. She thus banked on the Aussie tracksuit (different) and kangaroo moves (unique + connected to Australia winning a few points against people with superior technical skills. The judges obviously didn't see it this way but IMO there's a point to be said that wearing a random Adidas tracksuit (sorry what does this have to do with anybody's country?) and doing mad air flares / head-spins (cool - seen that before) could be seen as dull/generic though technically superior. Clearly there was a gap between the theory and the practice on this one though.
