Just in relation to 007s tip in the Golden Eagle. I know it's easy to be wise post event, but I did take on the Japanese fave. Thought Lazzat best of the visitors and Stefi Magnetica the locals. Backed em both and blow me down ran 2nd and 5th respectively with horrible hard luck yarns, esp Stefi. Both protested unsuccessfully too....cry me a river.
Good mate of mine who is a pretty good judge tipped me Steffi Magnetica I didn’t have a bet in the race but it was going win before getting absolutely poleaxed

Anyone having a bet in the Melbourne Cup? Of all names I'll be backing 'Saint George' (No.22) which is currently paying $23.00. Will most likely go 1 x 3 units.

And it's not just the Punting although I do love pitting your wits against the bookies. It's the whole experience - the beautiful animals, the skill and bravery of the jockeys, the colour and glamour of raceday. Seeing a foal at foot grow up to be a racehorse and all the miles and work that goes in to that happening. It's seriously one of life's great pleasures, and have to say I'm grateful to have been exposed to it a a young age.
I was lucky enough even though living in the city was exposed to horses and racing from a very young age My family had stables in the backyard sometimes we had pleasure horses their other times we had horse trainers renting the boxes A young Pat Webster had some horses at our place when I was very young Being around horses I ended up being able to ride one before I could a bike

At school one of my best mates Dad was a foreman for the great TJ Smith he lived in a house of TJs that had 24 boxes out the back He also looked after Kingston Town My mates older Brother was a top line jockey who tragically passed away in a fall at the trials a long time ago So I was exposed to racing very young and it wasn’t long before I was having a bet

Eventually I worked with the horses in racing stables and I was lucky enough to ride work and work with some pretty handy horses Mainly worked give the smaller trainers eith less numbers so it was always a real buzz to see one win a race I ve pretty much always worked in the industry since Icwas a kid abscess lucky enough to work 15 years with a very large and succesful betting company doing form analysts and also worked for TAB as a night time trader. I still do work in the industry now although I’m winding back or drifting in and out these day but its still a big part of my life I’ve been very fortunate to have had the exposure to the betting side of it but more so the horse side of it I sometimes toy with the idea of going back work with the horses again just to be around the horses

That's pretty good, and I didn't know you rode as well. I have ridden horses but never took to it like my Mum would have liked. I had a work break in 2018 and had a crack at the "pro punt" for a couple of years. While I'd back myself with most form analysts the part I was not strong in was staking especially when it came to laying horses on Betfair. I'd lay for example probably 20 losing faves in a row, then the next one would win and I'd lose any profit margin. Maths and percentages have never been my strong point.

P.s. one of the horses I like for the Cup tomorrow was probably lucky to beat yours last year in the Bendigo Cup (I think it was). Makes you think what might have been.

I think you are talking about Interpretation I too think it will run well tomorrow Not sure if it’s got the quality too win but it’s last run and even the run before it was good and there does seem a sense of timing to him. It will run the trip was strong late in last years Cup and this years Cup is as weak as I’ve seen in close to 40 years

My horse is in work and should be back racing some time in the next few weeks Last prep I think was 5 placings (3rd in Wagga Cup behind Fawkner Park) from 8 runs Another was 13th of 15 at Caulfield but he dead set should have won We should have some fun this time in with him as he will be ready to win when the better class horses are away

Interpretation was huge in the Cup last year. Young Ted Nugent set him a task.

Your bloke had a super campaign in 2023 and was stiff not to near win both Caulfield and Bendigo. This year he had some kinder runs in transit and just managed to find one or two better on the day. That's from the outside looking in anyway. Good luck this time in.

The big day is almost here. No, not the US election it's Melbourne Cup day! One of the few events that puts us on the world stage.

Ok, from once a year serious punters to the die-hards on here. Give us your Cup tip/bet/ or sweeps draw.

Just some fun to see how everyone goes. It's definitely one of the hardest races to pick, so good luck to all.

FWIW my top four in order are:
                  OneSmoothOperator
                  Interpretation
                  Sea King
                  Absurde

I'll be backing my top three picks and throwing Absurde in to a trifecta.

Remember to gamble responsibly , and most of all back your judgement!

I just watched last years cup again Interpretation was suited by the fast pace last year but the jockey got lost on the corner he went from being with the place getters at the 600 to be close to half a dozen lengths away at the 300

Vauban and Absurde were to close to the hot pace The first 6 over the line were all a mile back at the 1000 They both hit lead in straight but were sitting ducks for the swoopers

I agree with most of what you say about my horse But I don’t consider three wide no cover in a fast run race at Flemington as having a soft run in transit He kicked away that day but was run down late by a horse who had a soft run at the back We raced it twice after that with better runs and beat it easy

Off his jump out and the reports I’m getting I think he will have another good preparation and racing over the summer months will help

Horse racing aside. What other bets do you indulge in?

The election in the US is getting real close now. Who’s on who? Anyone up for any wagers?

Of course that Flem run was not soft!

As a wonderful grandstand jockey I thought Teo lost any real chance pulling out the widest runner from too far back. Needed to ride for splits and luck in a Cup (unless your on Kiwi).

I would take those runs the Willie Mullins horses had last year any day, regardless of what bat they might be going. And even though I'm dodging Vauban this year, gotta respect the old Fox he will have tinkered with something this time round.

Hoofnote: I jumped back in to the Ownership game myself with a yet unraced 2yo to be trained by Gary Portelli. See what happens.

                              Trapeze Artist - Ocean Bridge.

He started off with a bang at stud but hasn't thrown a real topliner yet. Griff prob his biggest win. She has a good winner to runner % as broodmare and was a fast horse herself, led up an Oakleigh Plate btn inside 2L I just liked the look of the filly and was more in my price range. Only 10%.

At the moment I’m trying to decide between Sea King, Buckaroo and Vauban, which I picked last year to much disappointment.
