Thought I'd kick off some discussion about gardening. Having recently returned from Italy, I'm looking to recreate some of the foods from Valtellina... so I've grabbed a few basics like sage, oregano, thyme, eggplant and tomatoes.

Any tips on how to put together a neat, compact garden bed? Also, how do you keep the pests away? (My veggies all seem to get done in by snails... which is mildly irritating).

Looking forward to seeing some gardening tips and tales!

Im something of a hobby gardener having created many of our garden designs and chosen all the plants. But I’ve never planted herbs or fruit as we have too many pests including a family of possums which have lived in our backyard (and the top of the house roof) for over 10 years now.

Possums are the worst. They eat and wreck everything!
They are also like dogs and want to mark their territory by pissing everywhere.

They are protected so you can’t ’get rid of them’ but you can make things very uncomfortable for them.

Better done in the cooler months but wet them with a garden hose at night. Imagine being soaking wet on a cold Canberra night. Very unpleasant. They soon learn.

Raised beds are great as you're not working on the ground. They also keep the Bandicoots out and help with drainage which is important! Bunnings generally has a great range of seasonal seedlings if you couldn't be bothered starting from scratch with seeds. My veggies and herbs definitely taste better with home made compost. Having fresh herbs on hand takes your food to another level.

My go to in Sydney was the Bondi Rd Fruitologist. I no longer have that luxury as I live on the south coast so I do my best to grow some fresh produce. It can be fun and also frustrating!

House with a relatively big block (~1500m2 corner block). The only catch is that a previous owner planted a heap of what I consider 'filler' shrubs so while the space is there, much has already been used. Also the garden requires a fair bit of weeding, so I wanna keep it as simple as possible.

Hilarious! I'd be thinking that things like having a dog would also discourage them?

I love possums but my corgis don't. My corgis are highly trained and usually ignore everybody except me (they walk by my side everywhere and won't follow anybody else or interact with other dogs/humans along the way), they hate possums. I often take them out for a wee at ~1am and their senses are next level if I take them anywhere near possums... expect lots of zombie-like growling from the nearby trees as my innocent little doggies smile as if they've done nothing. In reality they're some of the most devious animals out there as they sniff the possums out, quietly creep up on them (without me noticing) and start silly little cold wars with them, while smiling back at me all innocent and stuff. Sigh. I love my corgis and the possums but sometimes I wish they'd just ignore each other...

Lol that would certainly annoy them. Knowing my luck they’d probably just climb on the roof to try and find a nice cozy spot to hide,
