But what he could do is hit Russia with secondary tariffs on their oil exports. Their oil and gas has been largely unaffected by trade sanctions to date.
But the US has already suspended all Russian oil and gas imports since 2022. In fact in 2024 the total amount of all Russian imports into the US was only 3.5 billion.

Note the term 'secondary' which the Don has spoken of. These target purchasers of, in this case, oil from Russia to affect continuing levels of trade and demand for the product. Rather than primary tariffs which are direct between two countries/businesses. Sort of a virtual hostage scenario. But don't fret, at this point it's all a negotiating tactic.

I'm not fretting- i'm not in the US !

One area that i have to stand corrected is i thought that sanctions ( and there has been 500 plus in place against Russia) would have a significant effect on the Russian economy. It hasn't. In fact it has strengthened the ties of the BRICS alliance (Brazil Russia India China and South Africa) that was formed to eventually move away from the US dollar. So now there are talks between other countries, for example Canada, in regards to joining BRICS. That's just business i guess. When you're not happy with the way you a treated, then you look around for someone who will offer you a better deal.

        • i assume trump hasn't tariffed the russians because he wants to keep that threat up his sleeve if the russians don't concede anything to secure peace. we should have declared war on ukraine
