Tariffs were the domain of left thinking ideas, decades ago. It is amazing how things have turned upside down nowadays......

Yeah it can be about being left handed! Ive already mentioned Alan Jones having a bat- he may be a leftie

I used to amazed at those who bowl right handed and bat left handed or vice versa....but then came along Jemma Barsby (some may remember her dad Trevor ) who is a genuine ambidextrous bowler and can bat left or right handed. Even more amazing is she was diagnosed with MS 10 years ago. There's also a Sri Lankan Kamindu Mendis who can bowl with either arm

Thanks 08. I have been supporting a poster who has been the victim of verbal abuse, until IMHO a line was crossed recently, including direct posts to me.

Anyway, we have one leftie in our family, though she is a bit ambidextrous. I remember when I first used that word to her when she was about 8. She never forgot it and would proudly tell other family members and friends she was ambidextrous.

It’s funny how genetics work. From my immediate family it was 1 from 6 lefties (my brother) but I remember mum telling me, she was the youngest of 9 and only one of her siblings was a leftie. All her RH siblings had at least one child LH and the only one LH had no lefties kids. I think the worse thing though was my FIL telling me that back in the old days when he was at school they would give a whack on the hand with a ruler to any child trying to write with their left hand!

‘Enthusiastically encouraged’? Good on her for sticking to her guns.

I'm ambidextrous FWIW (hands and feet... any sport/activity). However I've always sucked at soccer, tennis, cricket...etc so unfortunately it's not much use for anything. In footy I was a 'runner' and never dared to do any kicks / long passes so again, it wasn't all that much use.

Out of convenience I use my right hand for writing... otherwise I end up blotching the whole page and hitting the person next to me. Occasionally lefties see me switch hands while next to them and are like 'that's a neat party trick - I saw what you did there'. Unfortunately it hasn't earned me any other accolades in life

Gina Rinehart wants us to be more like Argentina

As Australia’s richest person, Gina Rinehart has few qualms about giving out advice to the country’s leaders – and the odd museum curator.

But Rinehart, who was in South Florida to soak up the vibes at Donald Trump’s victory party, has returned to Australia with a spring in her step, even more buoyed by the immense wisdom shown by about 74 million Americans earlier this month.

At a speech for National Mining and Related Industries Day, hosted by Santos at its Moomba plant in South Australia last week, Rinehart showed her fellow resource heads just how chuffed she felt about the state of the world.

“Great to be with you all for our National Day. Shouldn’t we really have a national month or two, given our industry’s contribution?” Rinehart opened.

The rest of the speech was a fawning Trump love-fest, demonstrating just how breathlessly enthused Australia’s richest person is about a change in the White House.

“Don’t you just love the saying ‘drill baby drill’?” Rinehart asked the crowd, repeatedly returning to a slogan Trump had used on the campaign trail to rev up the oil and gas industry.

Echoing Trump’s supporters’ attacks on RINOs (Republicans in Name Only), Rinehart had plenty of digs at LINOs, which we presume are “Liberals in Name Only”.

“This is not a time for LINOs timidly fiddling around a few edges, careful not to upset the minority noisies or rapidly increasing bureaucrats, none of whom will ever vote for the Coalition. We need to make Australia great again, don’t we?” she said.

As leaders from around the world scrambled to Azerbaijan for the COP29 global climate talks, Rinehart took a swing at bureaucrats’ and billionaires’ luxurious gabfests in aid of banning fossil fuels. “This expensive net-zero cult sure likes to use lots of fossil fuels for their many, many trips, including using hundreds of private jets,” she continued.

There was more effusive praise for Rinehart’s fellow billionaire pal Elon Musk, appointed by Trump to run the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) with another billionaire, Vivek Ramaswamy.

Rinehart finished things off with a gushing tribute to another foreign leader, Argentina’s arch-libertarian President Javier Milei.

“This year I’d like to leave you with a quote from another brave, outstanding leader, the president of Argentina: ‘The collectivism and moral posturing of the woke agenda have collided with reality and no longer have credible solutions to offer to the actual problems of the world’,” she said. “The Americans and Argentinians have recognised the reality of this and voted.”

It was all very fawning, but when you’ve got Rinehart’s level of wealth and a captive audience of miners, you really can say whatever you like.

I got a idea. Lets scare the hell out of the lower and middle class with something thats nothing called woke, tell them that immigrants are taking their jobs and ruining their economy, double down on it all when they are told its all lies........and get them to hand the keys of the country to billionaires because it's the billionaires who have their best interests at heart!

Im always amazed at how many people vote for the party whose interests will hurt them the most

I wish right-wingers could be a bit more creative and create their own terms rather than hijacking left-wing terms such as 'woke' and giving it a negative connotation.

The history of 'woke' is that the term is the basis of To Kill a Mockingbird... African American protestors encouraged people to be 'woke'. This meant to be politically/socially aware of things like black people being falsely accused of rapes/murders that were committed by white trash. People would sing 'be woke' proudly during race protests. IMO being 'woke' is not a bad thing as it means being aware of discrimination.

Thus, it's pretty obnoxious that right-wingers flip it to have a negative connotation. The far-right live in a demented world and I'm glad I don't walk around 24/7 getting triggered by what they call 'wokeness' (i.e. any form of social progression that they disagree with).

As you say... it's a myth that tariffs and import bans will help those impacted by the downfall of the US manufacturing industry. While the lure of a low-paid job in manufacturing and less visas for international students (more places for my kids... right?) may seem tempting... is it really when you can't afford to eat because Chinese noodles are being replaced by overpriced tins of proudly 'Murrican Spam and the universities are closing down due to a lack of students? It's like the whole Brexit thing. Sounds great until somebody tells ya... y'know... this now means you can't own a holiday house in Spain and need a visa to stay there for more than 3 months? Oooooh! Hang on so they can lock me out too?!?!?!? Sigh.
