Only the Conservatives could have swung the gun laws. Had the ALP been in power, the Tories would have scuttled the plan solely on the basis of denying any win at all to progressives. It was a good reform but it was down to the emotional tsunami which followed Port Arthur before which there had. been no significant gun problem in OZ so the reform looked like a massive thing but really wasn't all that significant, Domestic violence is a far greater challenge and it affects our society much more than did guns back in the day. even the Tories (Nationals) now realise it was overkill and have been vigorously trying to roll it back.
The Laboring on Commo/Socialist Ideology was no more - into the dustbin or as the late great US President Ronald Reagan said "The Ash heap of history" - "The march of freedom and democracy which will leave Marxism-Leninism on the ash-heap of history as it has left other tyrannies which stifle the freedom and muzzle the self-expression of the people".
mmm the reform wasn't that significant - acknowledged globally as the Gold Standard of Gun Control
Laboring on was in power when the following occurred - mmm no significant gun problem - here's a few of these not significant gun events that Laboring on did diddly squat about
August 1987 - seven people shot and killed and 19 wounded in Melbourne in the Hoddle Street massacre;
December 1987 - eight people shot and killed and 5 wounded in Melbourne in the Queen Street massacre;
August 1990 - five people shot dead in Surrey Hills, Sydney;
August 1991 - 7 people shot dead and 6 wounded in the Strathfield Shopping Plaza, Sydney;
October 1992 - six people shot dead and 1 wounded by a lone gunman in the Central Coast of New South Wales;
August 1993 - three people shot dead by a gunman in the inner west of Sydney;
January 1996 - seven people shot dead in a murder-suicide in a Brisbane suburb.

I think the right always has the advantage that if's a conservative party so only needs to argue 'there is no change needed... the traditional ways (including conservative religious views on social issues) work... all this social progression is woke and a waste of money... things were better in the past when you didn't have to worry about wokeness'. IMO this is a simple (often misleading) argument, but a good one. Particularly when most major media outlets are unlikely to give you a hard time about it.
Same goes for economic management. The Libs got 3 terms with zero surpluses and kept saying 'oh this is Labor's fault for screwing up the economy' (yeah BS). Albo then banks the first surplus in 15 years and Libs be like 'oh that's our fault'. A more sophisticated observer would spend time analysing things like global economic conditions and revenue receipts. However, nobody does that and the old argument that 'the Libs are better economic managers' (despite 3 chaotic terms with no surpluses & a heap of BS from Mal, Abbott and ScoMo) gets recycled over and over.
An almost untouchable argument is that Hawke/Keating floated the dollar... opened up trade to China (including the rolling back of protectionist tariffs)... weathered a short-term recession that we really did have to have (inflation was too high with meant our terms of trade didn't suit exporting heaps of coal/beef/wine to China) and then left Howard/Costello with a generational boom. During this time we saw zero structural/economic reforms. Rather, we saw a lot of vote buying. Now one can argue that 'oh money should be given back to the people'. However one can also argue that governments are responsible for long-term strategies such as maximising revenue from the mining boom (so that it's not just Gina, Clive and Rio Tinto getting rich outta Labor's structural reforms), and investing in things like education/healthcare/welfare/preserving indigenous sites...etc. There's an argument that we coulda done better than palming off cash for baby bonuses and the like, suspiciously close to elections.
The left's problem is that it always has to innovate and particularly during tough times, I think pushing for any sort of change is tough. As we've seen with the referendum... conservatives will just wreck shyte for political gain by spreading misinformation (and conservative media won't just refuse to call them out... it'll slam progressives with a wall of criticisms/skepticism/misinformation).
Dutton's bland and has no vision. His only policies are to block reconciliation, block trans rights, scale back medicare, block migrants (despite supporting the genocide of Palestinians + Russia's invasion of Ukraine which hint... both contribute to increases in the refugee load) and to be a Temu Trump as he's got political momentum.
Unfortunately I think conservatives are better at the power game. It s*x but you see it through out friend the spruiker on here. For whatever reason... a bloke is inclined to register multiple accounts purely to say 'aaaaw suck shyte... Kamala lost... Trump won... I'm in the winner's circle and you're not'. I mean so what? Such people need to grow up IMO and that's why I block that kinda shyte.

It's interesting that Australia's highest unemployment and interests rates have been under Laboring On
Highest Unemployment Rate - 11.22% in December 1992

Not sure how folk on here intending to vote for Laboring on could ever sleep at night if that vermin souffs person is returned as PM.
Tense moment Anthony Albanese gets into a heated exchange with NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet over Sydney's $874 million football stadium- Anthony Albanese tells Dominic Perrotet to tear down Sydney Roosters sign
- The Allianz Stadium sign is part of team's $12.5 million high performance deal
- Mr Albanese is a South Sydney Rabbitohs supporter - rivals of the Roosters

I’m bemused not much has been said of Qld’s decision to cut public transport fares in Brisbane to just 50c.
Whilst I didn’t win the election for Labor it was a good decision for the Libs to keep it and the public has benefited. This is a genuine way to for the gov to fight the COLC - cost of living crisis. (Wasn’t he a winger for Parra in the eighties?!)

Dead set, trying to link crimes with political parties is just dumb unless you're talking about 1500 violent criminals storming the Capitol & bashing police/staff.
It's like me saying Port Arthur was due to Howard getting elected a month earlier.
It's one thing to disagree with politics. However, claiming that violent crimes are the fault of the government day is hust putrid (again - unless it's Trump style shyte where a madman incited crime & then pardoned them all, including a guy who killed a cop, one who made a cop braindead and another who was never caught as he was on the run for a heap of other crimes including paedophilia).
It's honestly why it's not worth debating politics on a footy forum. It divides us as fans and it's all over bullcr@p. 99% of the comments are below the belt and nobody's gonna change their voting preference because some dude's flooded a footy forum with stupid BS.

What about Dutton wrapping himself in the Israeli flag when the Libs fought tooth and nail for 18c of the RDA - the right to be a bigot. They thought, at the time, it would most concern Muslims (Fraser's mistake, according to the Dut). Anti Semitism in OZ runs at about 9% roughly the same as anti Sikh so it's not a runaway issue. However 51% of Lib voters have issues with Muzzies (compared to 25% of ALP voters. Most of those presumably blue collar). The "all the way with Israel is less an attempt to garner Jewish votes (Jews already vote for the Libs at at a rate of 5 to 1) as it is a not so subtle dog whistle to anti muslim sentiment in the base and elsewhere.
The case of the 2 nurses at Bankstown Hospital is, on the face of it, anti muslim dirty tricks perpetrated by Israeli intelligence. Given Netanyahu's unexpected ("unexpected" because who woulda thought that we were even on the radar) comments on Australia's leniency re Palestinians and their street protests, why should we not be skeptical of the msm hoo ha?
An Israeli "influencer" contacts a public hospital in a densely populated muslim area of Sydney which is seething with shock and resentment at the genocide perpetrated on kinsmen in Gaza. He is able to get 2 young staff on line. How much was edited and how much provocation preceded the nurses' comments are not known but something have must provoked it even "Hi' I'm an Israeli influencer". Maybe it was" There are a lot of Arab staff there in that hospital how do yez go with Jewish patients seeing that you arabs are getting your arses kicked?
I call it an egregious set up at this point, aimed at the ever so gullible sheeple, much like the "Exploding caravan" that we've heard nothing about since the "devastating and shocking" msm and ABC reports.
The Zionist lobby is using the msm (willing partners btw) and Murdoch has largely cowed the more independent media. The Latouf episode tells us quite clearly that Palestinian voices have been suppressed in our ABC due in large part to the insistence of the Lib appointment (and no doubt, Tory) Buttrose. Fearing for their jobs, the underlings fall into line as usual.
It's been the case since Murdoch media applied the blowtorch to the national broadcaster years ago with spurious charges of bias. The ABC has increasingly surrendered its independence which is bad news for all of us.Last edited by Paddo Colt 61; 02-13-2025, 12:57 PM.

You are as bad as they are then if you condone this including the ridiculous tin foil hat conspiracy theories you are using to defend these Anti-Semitic's
Nurses in alleged antisemitic video expected to speak to police as CCTV seized, staff interviewed
Two nurses at Bankstown Hospital who were stood down after a video emerged of the pair allegedly making antisemitic remarks online are expected to speak to police tonight.
In a conversation online with Jewish influencer Max Veifer, Ahmad "Rashad" Nadir and Sarah Abu Lebdeh appear to boast that they would kill Israeli patients if they had to treat them.
In the video, Nadir introduces himself as a doctor, and the pair could be seen wearing NSW Health uniforms.
After learning that Veifer is from Israel, the pair allegedly began to make antisemitic remarks.
Lebdeh allegedly said that if patients from Israel came into the hospital, she would not treat them.
"I won't treat them, I'll kill them," she allegedly said.
Nadir allegedly claimed that he had killed Israeli patients.
NSW Police is investigating the video, with Commissioner Karen Webb saying detectives were conducting interviews with staff and believe they have found the room the video was allegedly filmed in.
They have also seized CCTV footage.
"This is a sad day for our country, it is unthinkable that we are confronted with, and forced to, investigate such an appalling incident," Webb said.
"The speed in which this incident was reported by NSW Health significantly assisted detectives in what is a very serious investigation."
Nadir's lawyer Mohamad Sakr issued a public apology this afternoon on his behalf and said his client was feeling "very emotional".
"My client sends a very sincere apology to not only that individual but to the Jewish community as a whole," Sakr said.
"He understands what has happened, he's trying to make amends for what has happened.
"He has never appeared before the courts in relation to any criminal matters, he is a person of prior good character it is unfortunate to find himself in a situation like this."
"He is very emotional, I've suggested he seek some treatment.
"He has apologised for the action, for his words."
9News understands police expect to speak to the pair this evening.
Nadir earlier told News Corp he would issue a public apology to the Jewish community about the video but would speak with police first.
"It was a joke, a misunderstanding," he said.
"I will use social media, anything, to apologise but I need to go and see the detectives first."
Nadir left Afghanistan as a refugee and became an Australian citizen four years ago.
In an interview with SBS in 2015, he spoke of his good fortune.
"Back in Afghanistan, there was not much opportunity to get an education," he said.
Nurses stood down
NSW Health Minister Ryan Park said the two nurses had been "stood down immediately".
"Obviously, the investigative process now takes place, I do not want to leave a sliver of light to allow any of them to be able to think they will ever work for NSW Health again."
Park said he was sent the video about 7.20am today, and the pair were identified very quickly.
"Everyone is entitled to access NSW health and hospital services without fearing for their life, and without having that hate-filled attitude come through some of our health workers," he said.
"This video is disgusting. It is shocking. It is appalling."
Park also apologised to the Jewish community in Australia.
"To the Jewish community today, I say not only am I sorry, but I can assure you this - the care that you get in our hospitals will continue to be first class, we will investigate this uphill and down dale," Park said.
"We won't just be looking at this incident per se, and going through previous cases to make sure that that hospital has been working in a way that reflects those values around safety and care."
NSW Police confirmed it was investigating a video depicting alleged health workers making antisemitic threats.
"This morning, Bankstown Police Area Command launched an investigation into the video that has circulated widely on social media," police said in a statement.
"Officers attached to Strike Force Pearl have now taken carriage of the investigation.
"NSW Health believe they have identified the individuals involved and are currently assisting detectives with their investigation."
Strike Force Pearl is the police task force targeting antisemitic violence and vandalism after a spate of high-profile arson and graffiti attacks.
