Film star Russell Crowe has been banned from a pub near the set of his latest film following an argument about closing time, locals say.
Crowe has recently been praised for his good deeds while shooting a new Robin Hood movie near the genteel villages southwest of London.
But a spirited argument over licensing laws apparently ended with the Oscar winner being banned from The Brickmakers pub in Windlesham, Surrey.
A duty manager at the pub told the Sunday Express: "I'm not exactly sure what he's supposed to have done but there was apparently trouble and he's been asked not to return.
"It's not the only place he's been barred from. There are at least two others I know of, one here in Windlesham and another in Sunningdale."
A local resident told the newspaper: "We understand that he offered money to be allowed to keep drinking after closing time.
"Well, it's just not the way we do things here.
"Eventually he left, but not before smashing a plate."
News of Crowe's kindness had spread through the area earlier after it emerged he had donated cash to a nearby charity shop.
Cancer Research UK shop branch manager Julia Deane said the actor was not happy details of his STG1,000 ($A1,998) donation had come to light but Crowe's publicity agents approved the gesture being made public.
"I know he wasn't best pleased and we're sorry because he was so kind to us, but perhaps he should take it up with them. It seems they were keen to let the world know."
