Went to Gonis Schnitzel place tonight as part of a big group, as with the White Cockatoo the schnitzels were huge and as with the White Cockatoo big doesn't equate to good food, best part was the salad, schnitzels ranged from ok to completely blah, sampled quite a few from the menu, the aussie one was just putrid , beetroot, ham and fried egg also make sure you wear your sunnies, the place is so bright.

I did jokingly say to a friend this is training for when I go to the States next month, the only thing though I wasn't joking.

I crave for a good schnitzel, not a over crumbed deep fried mass produced piece of garbage [ not saying Gonis are that, they are ok] just a good old fashioned schnitzel like the old Gelato Bar at Bondi Beach used to do or the Schnitzel Haus that was in Campbell St near Kinsellas, they probably did the best or The Balkan, which had great schnitzels and usually 2-3 pieces and would just melt in your mouth. Last time I ate at the Balkan the schnitzels were still pretty good but the size was not as big, but still plenty enough though.

Breast fillet, dipped in whisked egg….bread crumbs & then slow cooked in butter, turning regularly.
When the chicken is just cooked through pull them from the pan & rest (covered in foil).
Serve in 5 minutes.
I have yet to taste chicken as tender or tasty.
I also refuse to buy anything that is crumbed. It is how they hide the rubbish.
Fess up, backwards. Ain't I right?

Got the city to surf tomorrow morning. So I am craving a spag bol or lasagne for tonight. Going to a ITi place not far from where I am staying in Baulko...they make a fantastic lasagne with Italian salad and olives. I forgotten the name of the place but it is in Kings Langley.

I would never buy anything crumbed liked that, I have terrible memories of my mother serving up those horrible crumbed lamb cutlets. The places I mentioned the Gelato Bar and Schnitzel Haus did great melt in your mouth veal schnitzels but that was back in the 70's/early 80's.The Balkan still do a decent schnitzel but they aren't as good as they once were.

Had some of the duck eggs I bought at Eveleigh Markets for breakfast yesterday, just yummy, having the alpaca on Tuesday night and the oysters went down a treat Saturday night.

Went to Otto for the first time Saturday night - after hearing so much about it over the years. It's OK to be honest, nothing special. I had the pork belly, which was pretty good, and a good sized portion. Ms Loiner had the gnocchi with beef cheeks and was a bit underwhelmed.
Best thing was the dessert - hazelnut brulee. Awesome, and I wish we'd have got one each instead of sharing.
The whole thing was a bit overpriced - $240 for two. I can't help feeling that it's the lunchtime crowd that like to sit by the water that have kept the place going. There have been much better places than this that haven't lasted anywhere near as long. Still, at least I've been now.
