Another good cheap Chinese is Good Wok at the southern end of King St Newtown near the Botany View Hotel, its just your basic western style Chinese but its good and cheap, the chicken and mushroom hot pot and the pork in plum sauce are my favourites and the fried chicken wings are delicious, go there often on a Friday night, it is basically a take away but they have tables so you can eat in, the only thing is they don't have a toilet so If you have been out drinking before you have to hold on or do what I do and just go next door to the Botany View.

                • Good Wok is one of those places you walk past you wouldn't look at twice, looks just like a take away place but the steady stream of people in and out mainly for takeaway made me take notice and try it one night and now I am a regular, it is down the St Peters Station end, if you ever go and have the chicken mushroom hot pot its not mentioned on the printed menu but is on a picture above the counter area, the first time I ordered chicken and mushroom off the printed menu but was given the hot pot instead, so glad they did, usually order it every visit now.
Not working in Kensington anymore means I hardly go to Ho Won now, I do like their dim sim steamed there and their fried chicken wings, I think though I will get take away from there after the football season starts on the way home after some of the games.

                  • Went to Dede's on the wharf yesterday at pier 2 Walsh Bay for a friends birthday, have to admit it was very nice, couldn't quite give it the excellent star but it was very good, had a lovely confit duck Maryland which was part of a cassoulet with white beans, pork belly and sausage but the stand out dish was an entrée of calves liver with mushroom on brioche, the claves livers were melt in your mouth. It was lovely sitting outside on the deck with views of Luna Park and the bridge, while it wasn't cheap it was actually good value price wise for the location, I would go back again sometime for a special dinner, you are on the water but away from the tourists.

                      • Went to El Beso in Darlinghurst on a travelzoo deal with 8 courses and sangria for $49 for two people, wasn't expecting too much but was really surprised, it was delicious, so many choices on the menu, will have to go again to try a few different things, left totally full, it was great value with the voucher.

Also today finally tried Patchett's pies at Mascot on SConcierge's recommendation, they were all out of their chicken pies when I went at 12.30pm, really wanted to try the chicken and leek but settled for a beef and mushroom, also tried a peppered beef one also, both were ok but not earth shattering, the sides of mashed potato, mushy peas and gravy were delicious though, may go back and try one of their chicken pies soon.

                              • Went here for a lazy lunch on Sunday, nice little club, food about general pub bistro standard but you are on the water and not paying inflated prices.

                                http://www.sydneyflyingsquadron.com.au/

Had tempura prawns which were nice, salt and pepper squid which was ok and the seafood risotto which was on the specials board, the risotto was nice and the seafood component pretty good apart from using the NZ green lips mussels which were ordinary, a better option would have been the local black mussels which are so much nicer but all in all it was a very pleasant afternoon out on the deck and the school of thumper bream that were swimming around the pylons had me wishing I bought a hand line along.
