Need PC Geek Help

My home computer crashed the other day and I have since found that the hard drive is dead and I need to replace it and have found that the size hard drive I have is no longer available
Can anyone tell me what is the maximum size hard drive I could put on a Pentium III PC that was manufactured in 2000 or would it be better to bite the bullet and get a new PC?

I also need help with data retrieval from the dead drive if anyone knows how.

Not sure about the data retrieval though. I get the local computer shop to do that for me..
