  • Home Brew, who on here produce the best?

I'm keen to get started and want to know any and all secrets to the best brews, so please share them with the turkey Slapper.

Homebrewing is great, make beer for $1.50/l compared to buying for $5/l.

    You can make your own high quality beer but you just need some background. There are some great sites eg beersmith.com, brewerschoice.com.au,homebrewtalk.com.....I'm not trying to flog anything or anyone. You have to know some basics: sanitize everything with high grade product; know about ales and lagers and the yeasts that determine the one your making; lager yeasts ferment at lower temps ~14-16 deg ,NOW IS THE TIME TO BREW THESE;there are tables that give you the recipes for different beers (go to your homebrew shop); using malt/maltidetrin gives body&flavour,using dextrose increases alcohol as it is 100% fermentable; read about hops; knowing yeast life cycle and fermenting stages as indicated by CO2 production(bubbling) or CO2 cessation with SG as read from a hydrometer tells you when to bottle or keg; now be patient. The problem with homebrewing is in two areas : *contamination (biological eg bacteria,other yeast/fungi or chemical );
*poor temperature control, you can brew an ale at 25 deg but it must be stable, brew a lager at 15 deg but if it gets to 25 deg you can kill off your lager yeast and introduce off flavours, stability of temperature is CRITICAL .
After a couple of months the beer can start to go off due to anaerobic bacteria that were at such low levels before
increasing, so cleanliness at all stages is important.Buy a kit today, you can move onto kegs after a while if you want.
Ciders , not alcoholic gingerbeer, stouts, international beers etc...you can make them all .
You can drink it for GF celebrations when the Roosters win........RAPTOR

      What Raptor said.

I'm back into brewing. It's a long term thing, a hobby, not a reason to just sink cheap piss IMO.

It's almost addictive when you get into it, the possibilities are endless as to how far you can take it.

Nothing better than opening a bottle of your own brew and actually enjoying the flavour and style, as opposed to the mostly bland commercial styles we are force fed.

The Aussie Homebrew Forums I've found very helpful for advice.

Mostly find a very good Local Homebrew Shop to source fresh ingredients. Some are extremely dodgy and are worth avoiding. I've discovered that fact the hard way.

      The FlogPen .

      You know it makes sense.

I'd like to see Gherkins face the first time he has a batch of fire extinguishers.

I have been brewing for around 7 years now. The above posts have pretty much summed up what needs to be said. Sanatise everything well. Fresh yeast as opposed to the packet stuff, and the biggest thing I found was to pay a lettle extra, and keg your brew instead of bottle.

Who wants to spend all that time cleaning bottles.

In saying that beer on tap turn you into an alco pretty quick.

Here's a tip mate, if you suspect a dud batch.

Protective gear. M'cycle helmet (full face oF course).
Full leathers & protective boots. Hope you ride a bike.

                      Seriously, it can kill.
Exploding glass bottles caused by an infection will kill any thirst.
