  • LCD HD TV recommendations?

Looking at buying a LCD HD TV. Not intrested in a Plasma as they use too much electricity.

Does anyone have any tips on what brands I should be looking at and ones I should aviod? I like the 42" size but not crucial. I juts want a good picture where we can plug the PS2 and Wii into. Have also head that some come with ports where you can plug your digital camera memory chip in to view pics, etc. Can you get them with USB ports so you can plug a memory stick in?

Would like to spend around $1500

Any advice both good or bad is appreciated.

I have an Samsung, it is very good.

Apparently other suppliers of LCD use Samsung screens in thier units.
I dont know about the $1,500.00 for one that size though.

    Cheers.

John look at sites like www.dtvforum.info and do some searches.
Look into the use of electricity as well, as I think the type of room you have might be more important. Read about what suits better and whether you have a light or dark room.

Also search prices on the net, there can be a huge difference in the price of the same TV between stores. There is always the oportunity for price matching and sometimes people are scanning receipts for others.

Most importantly have a look at the TVs in store, find out what source they are playing and get the one (name brand) that looks good to you.
There are also calibration DVDs around to help your picture get better.

and one last thing, don't get roped into paying silly money for HDMI cables, often what they want to charge you $100 for you can get for $20 and being digital they are not like analogue cables in the difference in quality.

I've had a Sony 46' LCD for 3 years and I'd recommend it to anyone.

        Beautiful picture and colour.

When the Roosters play I put my chair six feet in front of it and I'm there.

I think you'll have to spend a bit more than that John if you want something decent.

I have a JVC 42" HD LCD and have certainly had no issues with it - I love it. They had a great deal going through work in June of last year (Aust distributor is a client) and I bought it then, even though I had no intention of buying one til that time. It was too good a deal to miss out on.

Only problem I have is my internal cabling cannot cope with the HD resolution most of the time, which is why I'm looking to get the Foxtel IQ2 before next footy season. Sometimes it works in HD format, but mostly it can't get enough signal.

Great hint re that HDMI cable KB - I remember the guy who set up my TV "experimented" with one on my TV and when we realised it made little or no difference agreed it was a waste of money me buying it. So $100 was saved.

I am leaning towards a Sony Bravia 40" that I can get for under $1500. I will try and get a better deal by talking to the various stores.

Thats not a bad price I think.
Just check out where it fits in the Sony range, not too old etc. They do seem fantasic TVs the Sonys.

Just to clarify on the HDMI cables, from what I understand it is good to get one, they do mean you get proper transfer of HD source to your HD display. But people will try and rip you off when selling them.

Sony and Samsung make the best LCDs. For plugging the Wii and PS2 in you want to get some component cables. Using the normal composite cables (the picture is the yellow one) on an LCD will look like utter shite. For anything newer (DVD or BluRay players, Xbox360, PS3) use HDMI cables.

I paid $4900 for mine but they've come down quite a bit since then.

The Bravia's well worth the investment for mine. Couldn't live without it.

Try and find it in a store just to see the picture. I would not be happy to spend that much without seeing how it performs. Looks pretty good on paper though
