Not this time but it is good . I used the Italian Mutti bolognese sauce with some spicey, crisp chilli paste from an Asian grocery to give it a kick !

Pirozhki - Baked puff pastries with potatoes, beef meat, cabbage and cheese

Medovik - Russian layered honey cake consisting of honey-infused biscuit-like sponges that are coated with thin layers of cream

          • Bit of mishmash yesterday, bought some nice party pies and chicken wings to have pre game for the AFL Grand Final then was going to make some pizzas for dinner and have some other nibbles like taramasalata, olives and dolmades post game pre dinner.

Went for an ultrasound in the morning as i had a small lump that was making me feel slightly uncomfortable, left after the ultra sound and got a call from the doctor who was checking the scans before forwarding them to my GP and she said i would advise you to get straight to RPA emergency as the scan i had was also to cover the DVT i had approx two years ago, she said because it was in my thigh region it needed attention again straight away, so off to emergency and luckily all my details were there and the wait wasn't as long as it could have been and back on thinners again, not sure why it had spread again as it had shrunk the last two scans i had had, i had been off the thinners for a year now and the treating professor had signed off on my treatment so i am confused about it has all turned around again but its in that part of the body where it could quickly escalate to the heart so not mucking around with it again, will be interested to see what my GP says when he gets the report first thing Monday morning.

Anyway i digress, because of being in emergency for a few hours, missed the start of the AFL Gf but seeing it was recording caught up with it pretty quickly, so ended up having the party pies at around 4pm instead of the pre game entertainment so by dinner time only felt like the chicken wings and had a couple of dolmades, so the pizzas wait for another night ( maybe tonight )

            • We're in Bern and went to Noumi, which is a Michelin restaurant.

Left with mixed feelings TBH as the chef linked his menu to a travel blog post where he'd visited Japan (a place where I'm not 'the guru' of all things food but I've lived there long enough to know a few local nuances that I find most amateurs will brush straight past).

The overall meal was pretty good as far as degustation menus go. However the claims that it was a 'Kyushu' menu, followed by a blog/ingredients that went straight to some pretty mainstream/touristie stuff from Honshu/Hokkaido left me a little bit confused. Not to mention that their signature dish was venison (which you can buy in Japan but usually people go to Nara...etc [again not Kyushu] to see lotsa cute deer running around, not to eat them... noting that to many they are somewhat sacred/holy animals that one wouldn't eat).

I left questioning whether he'd REALLY been inspired by his trip to Japan, or whether he went over there already knowing he liked yuzu (a current fad in the west), and then sorta squirted it all over his usual South African scampi's / local venison while saying 'DONE... this is a Kyushu menu'. Noting that when I asked their staff whether a yuzu liquor had plumb in it they said 'NO!!!' (it did and anybody who can read the label or do a basic taste test could tell you that). They also mixed up the contents of an Italian red. I'm not a harsh food critic but I'm an Italian who's soent a heap of time in Japan... thus (un)fortunately a lot of the chef's wankery left me going 'dude it would help to Google your wines/ingredients as these were some pretty basic questions IMO!'

My own wankery aside it was a solid experience. Lotsa wine and while none of it tasted 'Japanese inspired', I'm in Switzerland so whatevz. The cooking and actual service were great. Also the venue itself had top notch aesthetics (at the Einstein Museum - only downside is that the bathroom situation was a bit poky - we needed to push past the bar [where couples were being served and waiters blocked the walkway to the dunny] and it was down a looong, winding staircase. Picture the moment. You've taken this hot Swiss woman of your dreams out for a $$$ meal then just as the waiter's explaining the finer nuances, and you're building up confidence to go in for a kiss... then outta nowhere, Jizzy pushes past an is like "s'cuse us mate, just going to the gents").

Overall a solid dinner. Glad I didn't get a royale with cheese in Lyon or le big mac earlier in the day as it woulda spoiled my appetite :P

                  • Beef Stroganoff - beef filet strips sauteed in sour cream together with mustard, onions and mushrooms.
                  • Bliny (Russian Pancakes/Crepes) topped with sour or fresh cream, jam, or honey - you can fold them or roll them up - you also have them with smoked salmon/caviar/ mushrooms/cottage cheese/ground meat and cabbage.

Is that the actual pic of the strognanoff you made King ? just interested in the ratio of sour cream used as it looks quite pale. The last few times i have made a stroganoff i have used Greek natural yoghurt , find it just makes it a bit lighter even though i do like the sour cream version.

A picture of what the beef Stroganoff looks like as my Wife loves the extra sour cream - It's her Grandmothers recipe

Makes these very fluffy pancakes/pikelets with butter milk , sour cream , apple and cinnamon or without apple and cinnamon as well

Just saw this Horrie. Not good news at all. Will send you a pm when I get a chance.

We’re buying some takeaway pizza tonight to have before the game. I haven’t watched a single game of NRL since Round 26.
