Luderick aka Blackfish has never been more popular as it's $20 odd a kilo. The punters don't realise that it's basically by-catch caught in a net which hasn't been bled before it dies. Luderick is delicious but you must know how to handle and prepare it for the table.
Your not wrong about the price of Flathead, i have seen it up to $70 a kilo in some places. When ever i have Flathead is when i have caught it or i will sometimes order it at Lifeboat at Brooklyn depending what other fish is on the menu, the only thing is i am hopeless when it comes to filleting Flathead.

I have always liked Luderick and have caught a few as by product of fishing for bream with either prawns or yabbies. When i worked at the bottlo in Kensington i had a customer who used to drop into me either whole Luderick or fillets that he had caught at Bare Island La Perouse as i used to save the champagne and bottle corks for him which he used to make floats.

I rate Pearl Perch, Coral Trout and King George Whiting as the three premier eating fish although realistically they aren't an every day eating fish in Sydney town, price or availability wise all though Coral Trout is popping up at the markets more now. Will be up around South West Rocks next month so hopefully will snag some Pearl Perch while there.

As for every day affordable fish or ones i catch i rate
    Leather jackets
    Luderick
    Gurnard
    Flathead
    Sand Whiting
as my favourite five eating fish, some places in Sydney are selling jackets for $25- $28 a kilo now but if i buy them i have a small fish shop i go to where they are between $ 7- $12 a kilo. I do prefer to catch them my self and some days i don't have a problem catching between 4- 20 decent size ones, other days they can be so frustrating but there is never a dull moment fishing for them.

      Hey Horrie.

Love my Flattie fishing. Hit them regularly on the south coast, especially Tuross which is a flattie Mecca.

Seafood prices in Aus are nothing short of criminal. You can even buy our seafood cheaper overseas! That’s right, we have done of the best fisheries in the world and other countries can enjoy or product for less than us. That’s farked! We are simply getting ripped off and we keep
      lining up for the privilege.

One of the big things I miss from living in Qatar was access and pricing of seafood. Would you believe we had flathead in the gulf as well? I would head down 2 or 3 times a week to the local fish market where the boats dock and I would get the straight off the boats for $2 a kilo! They weren’t prized there like they are here so were cheap. I would take home about 5-6 kilos and make fish tacos for days! Geeze I miss that.

You must take up fishing for Luderick, it's awesome and they tend to be more active and easier to catch in the winter when other species go quiet. I often catch leatherjackets when i'm spearfishing. They are delicious!

Fished and dived Sydney Harbour for decades before moving down to the south coast. Rose Bay Wharf is great for Luderick as was Hermitage Reserve and Flat rock Bondi when the ocean wasn't too rough.. Parsley Bay wharf was always reliable for Leather Jackets and Squid. Big Squid off Watson Bay wharf in the winter.

          The Fishing Thread.

I think Starlo lives down at Tuross. I've never been and always drive past it on the way to Narooma. I'll definitely go one day.

Narooma is my equal fav spot on the south coast.

Where do you stay around there? We usually shack up at Black Bream Point.

We used to stay in The Loop. It's Bob Car's sons house. Last year he was renovating so we found a nice place in Dalmeny overlooking the water. It turned out to be Julie Goodwin's holiday house. We don't know either of them! The Quarterdeck has great spicey chicken burgers.

I’ve heard about those burgers. Got to give it a go.

Its funny that you mention Rose Bay wharf for Luderick as one of my fathers old work mates was a regular there and caught many a fine fish there, he would have been the one to teach me the fine art of luderick fishing , i had seen him down there before and he would have five or six nice fish and other fishers would be dropping their floats right next to him and get zilch, he lived at Bondi Beach and also fished off the rocks around the north for them too. Parsley Bay is often referred as a great spot for jackets around the rocks or nets.
Where i fished in the harbour was mainly at Beulah St wharf at Kirribilli and that was my leatherjacket hot spot, also late Jan and Feb some nice flathead there also, quite a few bream there over the years but the leatherjackets and flathead were the prize catches. Also fishing for jackets would catch a few goat fish which are like red mullet and they were great eating.
The other place i noticed that was a good luderick spot in the harbour was the next wharf around, Jeffery St wharf right next to the bridge, one regular i knew fished there and would always get 4 to 6 fish a session, he came around to Beulah st one day to try his luck but only got one there and he ended up giving it to me.

Where im going to Stuarts Point/ Grassy Head next month is a Flathead hot spot, it is side arm of the Macleay river, so hoping for few Flathead or Whiting there, mind you i would be happy just with a couple of bream for the BBQ . My best catches over the years there have been Flathead or whiting though.

                        • Lamb burgers with home made wedges. Using some nice looking lamb rissoles which we got from a butcher in Coogee which we picked as part of a voucher won at the Coogee Legion club meat raffles.
Will have beetroot which i pickled on the burgers.

                            • Wedges cooked up nicely in the new oven. Will do some leatherjackets or roast chicken in it next. Speaking of leatherjackets i am feeling like a good old fashioned fish and chips so a visit to Lifeboat is on the cards soon for a feed of either Gurnard or Flathead, probably a bit late in the season for them to have luderick on the menu now but who knows. Some yummy prawn cutlets to start with and should also now start having the Hawkesbury school prawns available, so sweet and salty.

                              • So happy with the lamb rissoles, so tasty and hardly any fat came out of them when cooking them. All the flavours on the burger were nicely balanced.
