Whats on the menu for dinner these days??

  • T-bones from the local butcher, Manu's pepper sauce, garlic butter mushrooms, chicken salted home made chips with a beetroot, fetta salad . Beers beers and more beers ! ;-)

          • Lamb meatballs and risoni, defrosted from the freezer from a previous cook.

            • Ah the old days at Christmas -13 of us - 6 brothers / 4 sisters / me and our parents.

              My Mother must have got up so early to cook up Christmas food - Roast Beef, Lamb, Pork, Chicken, Turkey,, Leg of ham and baked veggies plus desserts - one cake with coins in it.

              My Father would never eat Beef or Lamb - had enough of it during WW2 - Canned Bully Beef and Mutton and more like a chunky soup -North Africa , Syria and PNG- the flies liked it he said and it was straight from the can - never able to heat it up for obviously reasons - cant have a fire going in combat areas.

              One of my older sisters somehow would always be rostered on to do the washing up at Christmas time - I was too young to be on it - She still complains about how she was always the washer up at Christmas time. - some dodgy changes to the roster I assume.

              I remember having shandy's - small amount of beer and mostly lemonade - beer was just for colouring

              Obviously there was no left overs at the end of Christmas Day and my Mother would have to make fried Ham , Tomato and Cheese sandwiches for additional food for dinner.

              The days of no microwave ovens as well

              • On boxing day we would make the annual trip to Ballarat to our Uncles place ( My Father's Brother) - made famous in the McDonalds Ad -the elderly bowlers ad - Debate about the picture of the soldier in uniform and whether it was our father who fought in WW2 or grandfather who fought in WW1. Then off to Geelong to see my fathers Sister.

                Behind our Uncles house in Ballarat is Sovereign Hill - Disappointed that when our Uncle passed we didn't buy the house - 22 of us as we are all married - only my wife and I wanted to buy it but we didn't have the cash - 240k was the price to buy it - now there is 6 town houses/terraces on that land where the house was.

                          You grew up in a very big family Salvo. It must be a huge get together when you all catch up.
