  • Coles had punnets of Perino tomatoes on clearance from $4 to 88 c so i bought a few, not sure why they were so cheap because they were nice and firm. Cooked some up tonight in olive oil and garlic and had with fresh fettuccine, bloody delicious.Squeezed some lemon juice on it and a sprinkling of parmesan cheese.

Interested to know how Russian chicken Kiev’s differ from the ’ones I make? I just use a chicken breast, flatten it, add a stick of garlic and herb butter on top and then roll the chicken into a log enclosing the butter. Then crumb it and cook it.

It's down to the spelling of the Ukraine Capital - Ukrainians spell it as Kyiv (Kiyev) and Russians as Kiev ( Kee-Yev) - Hence why Ukrainians would call it Chicken Kyiv and Russians would call it Chicken Kiev.

I don't see any difference other than that

It can be traced back to France as a dish traditionally known as côtelette de volaille.

Oh got ya. It’s just the name. I thought it was a different style altogether. I did wonder about the different spelling though and now I know why.

                      • Russian Mushroom and Potato Soup

Piroshki (Russian hand pies) Mince beef/onions/crushed garlic/shredded sour cabbage/carrot /tomato/mushroom/potato - I said to Mrs Salvo it's very similar to a Cornish Pasty.

Pirog - Plums/Apples/Blueberries were the fillings.- made with sour dough as you can also have meat and fish fillings - Honey drizzled on top and custard - sadly since Blue Ribbon Vanilla Ice Cream is no longer an Ice Cream ( Frozen dessert) struggling to find another ice cream - The best Ice Cream ever on the market and they change the recipe - that creamy buttermilk flavour made it stand out from the rest as the best.

                        • Had dinner at Hawker Inn in Nelson Bay.
Had vege spring rolls and fish cakes, i usually dont like ordering fish cakes as often they are rubbery and tasteless but these were excellent, vege spring rolls were good.
For mains ordered squid with ginger and shallots and the better half being a creature of habit ordered sweet and sour pork. Squid was so so, some was so tender other bits a bit rubbery, the vege component iof the dish was good but the dish lacked a bit of flavour, Sweet and sour pork was a knock out though , one of the best examples of the dish i have had .
