    Happy new year HH,

lots of places are on and off again at opening due to staff shortages because of covid, we like the takeaway options so we aren’t stuck inside.

Happy New Year to you and your family too Milanja. Yes i know what you mean about staff shortages re covid, some of our stores especially from the shire area were looking for any staff who could work due to their staff being off, a couple were looking like they might not trade NYE because of staff shortages. Our centre at Marrickville is getting pinged with alerts just about every day with all the business's there including our shop.
Have to get back down to Coogee but will probably wait till after the Jan holidays now, still love going to the Legion club though because the food is reasonable and it is a place you can settle into nicely with a drink and just watch the comings and goings of the beach and Arden St.

        • I made nachos for NYE dinner. Bloody tasty.

I then had two Oreos for desert. I was a real treat!

Don't think they do breakfast as they don't open till 11am.

Thank you re work, i'm getting so close to retirement, i'm starting to weigh up whether it is worth working one more year in this current climate, another year working would put me into a reasonable sweet spot but not sure whether i want to go through one more year working in this climate.

they advertised breakfast for Sundays a while back, but again, the covid disaster has probably not made it feasible.

You are lucky to at least have that choice on retirement, a few older work mates have recently retired, and after a couple months, they got some part time jobs two days a week to break up the routine, possibly because they had travel plans, but COVID hasn’t given them the chance.

I'm lucky i travelled overseas a bit before this pandemic set in so not so much a desire for over seas once i retire, did have 2 months in Europe planned for 2020 to coincide with my partners 60th but that didn't happen and in my mind that was going to be my last major over seas trip anyway apart from maybe going to Singapore or a quick West Coast USA trip. Plan to hopefully see more of Australia once i finish work. I am looking if i stay on at work this year to cutting my hours to 20-24 hrs a week which i can comfortably live on or if i stay on my 30 hrs i am going to ramp my super up more but to me i am looking as this year as my last work wise. Have 6 months of sick leave accrued at the moment so was looking at some minor surgery done while i was still working so i could use up some of this but not sure whether that is possible at the moment with the pandemic.

I know quite a number of folk that used their sick leave for various operations when still working instead of when retired - One Woman had both her knees done for an example. Might be a waiting period nowadays though for non elective surgery although from below the cap was lifted - not sure if another press release has come out since.

Thanks for the info, had the australianshareholders check list already saved. The minor surgery i was thinking of was to do with the veins in one of my legs, my sister had her done was she was still working and she had about 3 weeks or a bit more off recovery time, this was years ago and i think the procedure for mine could be done by laser, i'm not sure but will talk to my doctor when i get a chance, thank fully my knees and hips seem ok at the moment.

Spoke to my area manager yesterday and told him even though it is still a little while off i will be winding down this year and it will probably be my last year in the work place or early next year and that it will be it. Super is looking ok but wouldn't hurt with another year of contributions.

                        • We're spending the week in Wagga Wagga. A few highlights have included...
                          - Burgers (had a decent murray cod burger with coleslaw at Mr Lawrence)
                          - Tonight had a combo roast pork, salad and vermicelli bowl at Saigon
                          - Meatlovers pizza at one of the clubs the other night
                          - Hickory steak at Hoggies on our first night (we used to go there all the time when dating)

Not healthy stuff but good for the soul. Side note, I'm loving Carlton Draught on tap when compared with all those grapefruit-flavoured hipster beers I've been having back home. Under-rated IMO! Nothing beats a simple beer on tap at a country pub.

Back in Canberra I've been doing a (simple) weekly BBQ where I just pull out the Webber, whip up some sangers (from the Hawker Butcher - simple premium sausages that go alright) then chuck on corn, capsicum and potatoes [all with massive sprigs of rosemary as we have a huge box hedge of it] from the garden. I'll also put together a bit of a salad with whatever's growing best (lettuce, basil [it's gone to seed now], kale... silverbeet's the champ right now so I'll start boiling it soon). Don't mind a few beers with it either. As noted, the local Crankshaft and Barley Griffin go alright. However I'm getting sick of them and starting to tap the Peroni, Asahi and Sapporo. Tempting to get a longie of Draught next time and shout across the road to my neighbour while cookin' the barbie though.

I love to add some sauce too... have been rubbing the corns in a mix of sour mayo, cream, cayenne pepper and (garden) coriander per Weber's 'Mexican corn' recipe. Bit of dead horse on the sangers sometimes but TBH those Hawker Butcher ones usually taste better without it. Dunno the trick but they're literally just lean beef sausages. Whereas I usually pop sausages and enjoy the flavour of the smoke & charred fat, I generally under-cook these ones and just enjoy the beef like I would a steak or something. Dunno their trick but glad they're our local butcher.

Its interesting now that Murray Cod is being farmed that a lot of places are using this fish more, Charcoal Fish in Rose Bay almost exclusively use Murray Cod in its menu and a place i go up north called Hot Myrtle at Grassy Head use it as their main fish for their dishes.

Will check out the Hawkers butcher when i'm in Canberra next, have mates who live in Hawker and i usually stay with them when i come down to Canberra, i like checking out butchers when i'm away to find different sausages and risoles to take home, i love sausage and risoles that can stand up by themselves without having to add sauce.

Interesting! I might have to check that out next time I'm in Sydney (I'm going tomorrow but it's gonna be a super quick in and out visit as I'm going there to pickup a heap of retro electronic goods). As always, anything can happen though

We catch ours wild and make fish cocktails with home made chips... can't beat it... Add some Yabbies and a few ales and its even better..
