Farmed in Vietnam. Not ideal but it eats well.

I was thinking of the dreaded Mekong catfish which is sold as Basa and still sometimes here in Australia is marketed as Barramundi but did some reading and there is actually Barramundi farmed in Vietnam. Still fresh would be better but just not possible where you are living at the moment.

Yep it’s definitely not the best way to get it but at least it’s the real thing.

Im also getting the Vietnamese farmed prawns into me lately. If you get the medium sized ones, they are actually ok and just pop in your mouth.

Had some medium king prawns from the Jersyville Co Op near South west Rocks last month and they were among some of the nicest prawns i have ever had.

A fish shop at Maroubra Junction has great prawn displays in their window but their prices are frightful , they have the Australian prawns and the Vietnamese or Thailand prawns right next to each other and even the prices of the imported prawns are over the top, i can buy Australian prawns at a few decent places cheaper than what they charge for the imported prawns there.

Fresh Aussie prawns crap all over the Vietnamese ones but the Aussie ones aren’t available here.

Got a place up on the north side of Brissy and whenever I am up there, I love getting the prawns fresh off the trawlers at Cabbage Tree Creek. They also do butterflied whiting and flattie tails which are delightful!

My family used to be spoiled, one of my uncles ran a fishing trawler from Evans Head and i can remember boxes of prawns being flown down to us and we used to head over to Mascot and pick them up, they weren't large prawns, often the the schoolies or small to medium kings but never the large ones but they were always sweet and succulent, i miss those days. In the later years when he sold his trawler and worked in the co op there he used to send down stacks of the filleted red spot whiting, i would just coat them in bread crumbs and quickly fry them, yummy, another thing i miss now.

How good is the whiting. I eat it everyday when I’m up there from the co-op.
I only eat schoolies & they are the best.

                  • Beef stir fry with lots of brocoli, carrot, baby corn and red capsicum.

Do you use the broccoli stems in your stir fries MR ? the stems of the broccoli are one of my favourite ingredients when i do a stir fry.

                          • Made a seafood linguine, prawns , mussels, leatherjacket, tomato and garlic . The prawns , mussels and leatherjacket fish were nice through the sauce, would have put some squid in it to but the place I went to only had frozen imported stuff so i didnt bother, didn't have any fresh pippies either or otherwise would have just done prawns and pippies

                              • Last night I tried a new Thai place that opened recently.
Had a lovely Crispy Catfish in Spicy basil curry.

Finished it off with my favourite… Thai mango and coconut sticky rice.
