Whats on the menu for dinner these days??

Sounds like a good plan. I’m looking forward to our traditional prawns and fish & chips on Good Friday. As well as hot cross buns.

Was hoping to have picnic tomorrow but seeing the weather report isn't good i have pulled out a piece of beef out of the freezer to bake tomorrow night.
Did buy some green prawns today to have with prosciutto which i can do on the BBQ or in the pan on the stove for lunch tomorrow, was going to buy some bugs and cooked prawns today but seeing i had them last night for dinner i thought no, i actually didn't enjoy the prawns last night, the couple of time i have bought king prawns from the seafood place in Narrabeen i have been disappointed in them but when i heard the sales guy say to another customer the kings are nice and salty i thought i would give them another go but they were so bland yet again, the bugs however were sensational and have always been good when i have bought them there.

Left over spag bol from the freezer tonight, didn't feel like cooking anything major after being away for a few days on the northern beaches. Going to have a 2016 Penfolds Max Shiraz Cabernet to go with it while i watch the football.

I don’t think I’ve ever tried bugs before. I love a good piece of fish and prawns. Or lobster and squid. I must give them a try sometime. I have tried oysters, a long time ago and found them way too salty which put me off ever trying them again. I don’t like your chances of a picnic if the weather there is anything like it is here today.

If you like lobster you would like bugs, i find the Moreton Bay bugs a nicer alternative to lobster, they are generally a bit sweeter and you really don't have to have sauce with them like lobster, just a squeeze of lemon There are also Balmain bugs which are similar but they have a more fishy, savoury taste than the Moreton Bay bugs and i prefer the Moreton bay bugs over the Balmain Bugs any day, unfortunatley now though bugs aren't cheap , the Moreton Bay bugs used to retail for around $45 a kilo a few years ago but the price seems stuck at around $65 a kilo now.
I do like oysters but the floods over the last couple of years have really affected the crops and supply of them, best ones come from the south coast when you can get them but also some decent ones from the north coast at times, natural with a bit of lemon is my favourite way to have them but i don't mind them done in a tempura batter, Sydney Rock oysters are the far superior ones over the Pacific oysters but some of the pacific ones i have had in Tasmania were sublime.

I do like my fish and so many different types around, to many to list that i love and yes of of course, squid and prawns, love the smaller school prawns when they are in season between November and April, so sweet, other wise i generally prefer the Tiger prawns over the King Prawns although last time up the coast i bought some medium king prawns at South West Rocks and they were close to the best prawns i have ever eaten. i find in general the bigger king prawns have less flavour over all.

Yes decided last night no picnic today so that's why i took the beef out the freezer to roast for dinner tonight, having prawns wrapped in prosciutto either for lunch or an entree before the beef. Been raining here since about 9.30 am but has stopped briefly so going to go out and get some hot cross buns.

You’re not wrong with the cost though but red meat isn’t much better these days either. I’ve already had hot cross buns for breakfast today and some tiger prawns for lunch, just from woollies though sadly. Takeaway fish and chips for dinner coming up.

Yeah, I jest of course. I observed them for a long time though. These days I find any religious symbolic practices unnecessary. But somewhat strangely, I still haven't eaten red meat on Good Friday that I recall. Dont eat much red meat per se I guess though.

I still stick to the no red meat on Good Friday thing. It’s probably because of years of indoctrination by my mum. I think I still do it out of respect to her more than anything else.

Yes when we were kids our family we didn't eat meat on the Fridays in Lent at all, of course we would go to the Royal Easter Show on the opening Friday night and could only have hot chips, there were no dagwood dogs or pies , i do remember there was one Easter where St Patricks Day fell on the Friday we went to the show and for some reason my mother said we were allowed to have meat that day, the Showbag hall had a Henny Penny chicken stand in it so instead of having just chips, i made sure i had chicken that night. Although my mother still was a practicing Catholic in her later years i think she let some of the traditions of the faith slip.

Yep i know Jack. I actually observed and followed not having meat on Good Friday for many years after i moved out of home, not because of any religious symbolic practices either, just that i did like seafood but i think after it got to the point when pubs were allowed to trade on Good Friday i thought it was time to let some traditions to slip.

It was actually red and also white meat we couldn't eat, anything off the land. It was only seafood or anything that came from the water.

Yes you’re right. Only seafood. No chicken either. Mum wasn’t even Catholic but her mum, my nana was fairly religious I think so she passed down those traditions to her and so on. Just like your story with the Easter Show and only being able to eat chips, I remember once when my brother ate a pie for lunch on a Good Friday…well let’s just say he was in the bad books. My son has only recently moved into a share house and he told me today that he’s having chicken tonight. So my mum would be shaking her head if she was still with us at that thought. I’m glad I kept the tradition going out of respect for her but am happy to know my own kids will be free to do as they please without any sub conscious guilt. And you’re right about some of the things that have changed like pubs opening and footy being played. Times have changed.
