  • whats the difference between yiros, a kebab and souvlaki?

anyone know, so maybe its a slow work day ....??

A yiros is when they cut the meat off a big roll that you see spinning slowly in the shop that's selling it...a souvlaki is when you get the lamb cut in square chunks and on the stick...the kebab is a copy of the yiros...

And in Sydney its spelt Yeeros for some weird reason. In Bondi, when i was growing up, it was called a Schawarma(?sp) too btw.

Shawarma is different to the above 3 as well...its lamb that's sort of shredded and marinated in a marinade that's got a lot of lemon...it's arabic as well...where as Yeeros and Souvlaki are Greek the Kebab and Shawarma are arabic...

I never knew what "souvlaki" was till reading this, but had heard the word on tv shows. We get them from chicken shops, but they're made from chicken and not lamb and they're just called kebabs.

Never even heard the term "yiros" before, they're doner kebab and chicken kebab down this way.

a souvla originated in turkey. It means skewer. It was adopted by the greeks during 400 years of ottoman rule. Greeks add the aki on the end the ofwords to describe the item as little so souvlaki means little skewer.

                            I heart kebabs.
beef, chicken, lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese, tabouli, chilli sauce.
