  • "My fathers a wacko", says Abotts daughter

Tony Abbott's daughters knock him off sex 'high horse' Samantha Maiden From: The Australian January 26, 2010 11:38AM Increase Text SizeDecrease

TONY Abbott's daughters have told him to keep his lifestyle advice on sex and drugs to himself, with the Liberal leader confessing they've told him "Dad, you did all of those things ... and I did".
Mr Abbott, a father of three daughters who has previously admitted to once drinking “some sort of hemp yoghurt” that left him “away with the fairies for about 12 hours” told 3AW today he had a chequered past, saying he is “no one's parish priest” and he did not want to offer sexual counselling to the nation.

The Liberal leader fleshed out his advice on virginity, urging men to not act in ways that “demean others” but suggesting young women should not “give themselves away lightly”.

Mr Abbott was speaking today ahead of the publication of an interview with The Australian Women's Weekly and said politicians today were asked questions they would not have been a generation ago and people then “tut-tutted about the answers”.

Asked if women should keep themselves for marriage, Mr Abbott conceded his own advice to his daughters was clear.

“They shouldn't give themselves away lightly. I was asked what would I say to my daughter,” he said.

“Well I think all of us should act in ways that value ourselves. I am trying not to be a prescriptive here, I am trying hard not to be preacher. In the end these are all very personal things. But if someone asks my advice I would say don't do anything that you will live to regret if you can possibly help it. Try and behave in ways which a self respecting person would act.”

Asked if his advice was the same to young men, he said it was “much the same.

“Treat people with respect and don't act in ways that demean other people,” he said.

Mr Abbott, who famously believed he had fathered a secret son for 25 years, conceded he had a very “chequered past”.

“When I start to get on my high horse and say don't do this or don't do that they said, `Well, Dad you did all of those things', and of course they are right, I did.”

On the question of contraception, Mr Abbott said “the rules” of the Catholic Church were clear.

“What it means is you should act appropriately in the circumstances. Every situation is different. I am no one's parish priest. Just because you are the Leader of the Opposition doesn't mean you are trying to counsel the nation.”

Abbott's views are sounding increasingly reasonable, definitely more so than those bashing him. Thanks captain.
