    boy in armed robbery attempt

A 12-YEAR-old boy carried out an armed robbery at a petrol station in the New South Wales Hunter region before he was locked inside and fell through the ceiling, police say.

About 9.10pm (AEDT) yesterday, a 30-year-old man was working at a petrol station on Main Road at Fennell Bay when the boy entered the store.

The boy allegedly produced a knife and demanded money but the shopkeeper ran from the store and locked the boy inside before contacting police.

The boy tried to open the cash register before allegedly taking a number of packets of cigarettes.

When he discovered he had been locked inside, he tried to kick the door out and then climbed into the ceiling cavity, only to fall through the ceiling.

He then allegedly grabbed a display stand and used it as a battering ram to smash the glass door and flee the scene.

He was apprehended by two males as he ran along the road and was arrested by police.

He was charged with several offences and was refused bail to appear before Parramatta Children's Court today.

THESE are the first looks at life behind bars for the man dubbed "the Honeymoon killer'': Gabe Watson acting in a prison production of Macbeth.
Clad in a sarong and South Sydney Rabbitohs cap, the American was filmed playing nobleman Lennox in an April 30 rendition of Shakespeare's bloody tragedy.

This picture still of Watson's thespian turn in a gym at Borallon Correctional Centre can finally be revealed, with the American due for release tomorrow after an 18-month sentence for the manslaughter of wife Tina in 2003.

The stills were taken from video footage obtained by Channel 9, which will be shown on the network's evening news bulletin tonight at 6pm.

The American now faces deportation to his home state of Alabama for a second trial - this time for murder - over Tina's drowning while the couple were scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef.

Plus a new salary cap cheat:

      AUDITOR TO BLOCK INGLIS DEAL
NRL salary cap auditor Ian Schubert was at a Roosters gathering in Bondi on Friday and was telling his mates the Greg Inglis deal won't go through. He was saying Russell Crowe has made his job easy, whatever that means.

CROWE SUBJECT OF NRL CAP PROBE
THE NRL is investigating the business relationships South Sydney part-owner Russell Crowe has with a number of media and entertainment companies in relation to the club's salary cap.

Acting on an email tip-off, salary cap auditor Ian Schubert is delving into Crowe's recent dealings with Channel Nine, Channel Seven, ANZ Stadium and V8 Supercars.

But the Hollywood star sent us an email on Friday, sounding anything but concerned.

"The author of the email below is a chronic conspiracy theorist and you should do your own due diligence regarding the individual before taking anything he writes about with any level of seriousness," Crowe said.

"His antics are well known at Souths. Every connection he makes is untrue and the product of imagination only.

      "Have a great weekend."

NRL boss David Gallop, who was copied into the email, says the investigation will continue.

Part of the investigation involves Souths players Sam Burgess and Beau Champion working on Channel Nine's Footy Show this year and Greg Inglis signing a third-party deal with ANZ Stadium in his new contract.

We're told the NRL will interview Crowe to establish if players benefited from any of his roles at Nine, Seven, the Ben Hur extravaganza at ANZ Stadium or the V8 Supercars.

Gallop confirmed the investigation is not all about Inglis' new contract that is yet to be approved.

"We have received some information from a gentleman who has now sent the info to you and other media outlets," Gallop said. "It is not unusual to receive that type of information - we are looking into it, but it is too early to say what it might lead to."

Asked if Crowe would be questioned, Gallop said: "We don't generally announce the nature of our inquiries, but where credible information is provided to us we interview all parties that could be relevant to the issues raised."

There is no suggestion Crowe is knowingly involved in an attempt to cheat the salary cap, but the NRL is determined to establish full details of arrangements at companies where Rabbitohs players have third-party deals.

Inglis' ambassador role with ANZ Stadium came just two weeks after Crowe had appeared as a narrator for Ben Hur.

We understand Crowe was paid by the stadium for his work, but at a figure far less than the going rate for an actor of his stature.

The herald had something about an investigative accountant (a souths fan actually) who sent in docs detailing how he didn't think that burgess, luke, taylor and inglis could fit under the salary cap. I think this is similar.

From what I read the Inglis deal is legit (and back loaded.) He gets their whole new $100,000 marquee player bonus, a $225,000 salary (including a puck load of 3rd party sponsorship $$$) and a $25,000 car. All up $350,000 under the cap. The question is whether the NRL will change the rules specially so that incomes can't be so heavily backed up by 3rd party deals + the marquee bonus.

Not backing souths, but the dragons have more marquee players and easily signed Gaz... it appears that real scrutiny only comes to certain clubs. If they have to change the rules in order to block Inglis then the system is a joke...

That said I have no problems with Souffs getting farked over.

The third party deals are meant to allow marquee players to negotiate with unrelated parties to increase their income. They are not meant to be used as an incentive to sign with a particular club - they'd hardly be "third party" if they were!

Brisbane have been rorting this provision for years and now Souths are having a crack. Both need to be pulled into line.

When Masters asked why the Brisbane third party deals didn't stick with him it set off alarm bells. The third party deals are not allowed to be tied to whether the player is at a particular club.

I think we are supposed to be jealous because they are close to signing Inglis who is a junior of the club. He must be a junior otherwise they wouldn't sign him would they?
