TONY ABBOTT has ordered his troops to focus on the government during what will be a protracted climate change debate and to shelve their personal views so they do not become distracted by an internal fight over whether global warming is real.
Mr Abbott issued the edict to his party room yesterday as the independent MP, Tony Windsor - one target of Mr Abbott's call for a ''people's revolt'' - revealed he had received death threats.
Mr Windsor told the Seven Network that unless the harsh language of the debate so far was toned down, inside Parliament and on talkback radio, there could be another shooting like that of the Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.
''We're getting very close … to going over the edge,'' he said.
Mr Abbott called yesterday for ''tens of thousands of people'' to ''bombard'' Labor and independent MPs with emails, phone calls and letters, and to bail them up in the street.
He and Julia Gillard continued to trade blows in Parliament yesterday after both gave rallying cries to their troops.
Mr Abbott told the party room that regardless of personal points of view, the Coalition accepted that humans contributed to climate change and MPs and senators must focus on Ms Gillard for breaking her promise not to introduce a carbon tax.
''This is a tax issue, not an issue about climate change,'' he said. ''Yes, we believe climate change is real, yes, we believe humans make a contribution towards climate change.''
The Nationals leader, Warren Truss, said ''this is about a prime minister who is a liar''.
Mr Abbott, who once described climate change science as ''absolute crap'', presides over a party about half of which disputes that humans contribute to climate change.
Ms Gillard told caucus to prepare for a long and hard debate. Mr Abbott's ''culture of complaint'' ultimately would be exposed, she said. Just as he no longer complained about the flood levy after claiming it would bring down the government, so too would he be rendered mute by policy success on a carbon price.
''We will engage patiently, calmly, methodically,'' she said. ''Tony Abbott will appear increasingly hysterical and flaky.''
Mr Abbott has promised to repeal the carbon tax if elected in 2013 but the Greens said they would block any such moves.
Mr Abbott said the Senate would have to respect an ''overwhelming mandate''. ''I'm not assuming that the Senate will be hostile and I am assuming that should we win, we'll have a very strong mandate,'' he said.
Another option would be for an Abbott government to call a double dissolution election if the Senate twice rejected legislation to repeal the tax.
Ms Gillard said this would create investment uncertainty and ''rip out of the purses and the wallets of householders that assistance that we have provided them and which they have factored into their family budgets''.
''Directors, businesses, boards would make decisions, they would start employing people, and then Mr Abbott would come and sweep that away, recklessly stranding those investments and losing those jobs,'' she said.
