I hate the 'so we can be free' excuse. We're a nation good at sending men over to fight battles that aren't ours.

And before anyone attacks me, my father is a Vietnam veteran who has lost his hearing, had cancer and refuses to discuss with his three children anything he saw over there. War is ****ed.

Isn't he the controversial one where people are saying:
        a) He didn't do anything special and has been awarded for what others did. Members of his squad have come out and said ''If he gets the VC, then the rest of the team should, too.'' One claimed that he put their lives at risk for no reason (rather yhan backing off) and his squad had to stick around and save him, risking all of their lives.
        b) He has a record of bullying and sexual harrassment that has been swept under the couch.
        c) The actions he got the VC for weren't even worthy of a VC regardless because a VC is for risking your life to save the life of another (e.g. running back 100m into enemy lines under heavy fire to save an interpreter) - he just risked his life (and the lives of his squad members) in an act of raged stupidity, where he killed some of the Taliban, who were going to be bombed anyway.

The claptrap im seeing here is making me sick. farking bleeding hearts mouthing off when they should just shut the fark up and be grateful they live in a country people died for to keep free. Yes, thats what they did. we,d all be speaking Japanese if they didnt. Anzac day isnt about glorifying war, we never started any wars, its about remebering people who made the ultimate sacrafice. I for one am proud of them and grateful for what they did. Show some respect.

I don't support anyone being killed for anything.

Anyone who's been to war wouldn't wish it on anyone.

              Go wave your flag.

No mate, that is not the case at all.
Did you see the result of what the Diggers went through.
Did you have a Grandfather and Father who suffered after terrible wars.
I dont defend war and I am not a nationalist brown shirt.
What I am though is a person who respects the soldiers who had to endure war because Australia was asked to send our young men to fight on the other side of the world. Every ANZAC Day, I show my repect to those who lost their lives and those whose lives were ruined due to war.
I dont think you totally understand that though. They did that so that you have the freedom today to say the shit you do.

                        I do, my late grandfather.

He didn't like to talk about it. As kids we had to be careful not to wake him up suddenly when he fell asleep on the couch because he'd go beserk. All his brothers were killed.

ANZAC day has become a depressing spectacle. Twenty years ago no one flew flags or got Southern Crosses or got maggot at Gallipoli.

It's emotional nonsense and it's dangerous.

                          Playing devil's advocate here.

In World War One, it was all about King and Country (my great granddad said it was a way to get off the dole queue.) He jumped ship in England and signed up under a different name, to play in General Monash's band.

World War Two was us going again with Mother England but Curtin cut the ties and set us up with the Yanks. My Grandfather went over with the Empire training scheme and became a navigator on a bomber.

My father just missed an all expenses paid trip to Vietnam in 1966 when his ball dropped.

Iraq is/was a disastrous Vietnam style war.

Afghanistan is all about soldiers being paid $70,000 danger money for six months. I've got a mate in the Sappers who's been back three times as he wants to buy a house when he gets back.

Neither my Great Grandfather nor my Grandfather marched in Anzac Day parades.

                            The list for me:
                            - Dad was studying to be a doctor so got out of war.
                            - Uncle didn't get called up.
                            - Grandpa was flat footed, had asthma and found a heart problem when they didn't accept those excuses.
                            - Other grandpa was Italian and refused to get naturalised, so wasn't allowed to go (didn't want to either... escaped Italy to escape war and his first wife. Bought lots of pubs in Australia and found a young Aussie chick.)
                            - Great grandpa was a diplomat.
                            - Other great grandpa was dishonourably discharged because he decked a senior officer back (after having the cr@p bashed out of him for no reason by that officer... so all his records + achievements were deleted from history and we can't find much about him.)
                            - Wife's Japanese... haven't really asked what her grandparents did, but I've seen pleanty of photos of them in army gear saluting the rising sun.

So yeah... you can all thank my family/relatives for your freedom
