DVD's backup

Can anyone advise me on how you can rip your own purchased dvd’s onto your laptop (like you can do with your music cd's)? Not only as a backup but also for having access to my movies when travelling rather than carry around dvd cases? I tried googling but most comments go high tech and I don’t understand. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try Divx converter or personally i prefer Roxio dvd burner. burn it as an ISO image
