  • Best Oysters in OZ?

For me! Sydney rocks... If there farmed, then Forster followed by South west rocks then Karuah.. But Cowell in South Oz had fantastic wild oysters that I collected from around pilons and artificial rock walls at low tide, much like sydney rocks in flavour but as big as the palm of my hand..

The best Sydney Rock Oysters come from the south coast, Merimbula and Pambula are usually the nicest, Shoalhaven have some beauties too. North Coast the best are from the Camden Haven River and Nambucca. The market I go to at Warriewood on some Fridays have the Karuah oysters, will be going there next week.
Actually never had a bad Sydney Rock oyster but I find the ones from the Hasting River in Port Macquarie my least favourite.

I'll always swing past Greenwell Point when i'm down the South Coast. No oysters last visit due to all the rain however we also buy 3 odd kg of squid tentacles from another local fisherman.

Fresh tempura squid candles and oysters with a cold beer after a surf is always worth the trip down.

The only Oysters I've had from the south coast were from Batemans bay and Bermgui both were ok, not as good as the others I mentioned ..

The Greenwell Point ones that 2026 mentioned as good as I have had anywhere, nice and salty. Had some of the Batemans Bay ones from the Burrill Lake fish shop a couple of months ago, not bad but have had better.
Will be at the Warriewood Beach markets this Friday so will get some oysters from there, he sometimes has the Karuah ones.

I only buy them shut in the shell [ generally the larger ones] and like them plump and in nice fresh salty sea water....... Wash down with a nice beer [preferred] or sav blanc!

Love the Sydney rock from pambula too, went to a place in NY that served me 6 west coast and 6 east coast oysters, the 6 from the west coast were sensational big, firm and tasty, the east coast ones were a little sloppy like the Pacific oyster from tassie.

When I was in Las Vegas last year, went to this place and had a tasting plate of six different oysters from 6 different regions, all oysters had a different taste, some delicious and a couple a bit sloppy as you mentioned, all went down well though with a glass a sav blanc.

Had probably the best oysters I have ever tasted last Sunday, bought them at Bermagui and they were from Lake Wapengo.
