  • In my late teens a friend introduced me to Dire Straits. I borrowed her Making Movies tape in return for one of mine. I became obsessed with the first two tracks and played them constantly for weeks. In the end I had to buy my own copy.

Tunnel Of Love was one of my favourites as a kid I used to play it all the time as my eldest Sister had the cassette The outro which is a little over two minutes is magical.

This also brings back a great memory ftom about six years ago A Mongolian girl who worked in my local whom I became friends with and used to hang out with She was working doing the opening shift one morning so I popped in to just chill with her as it was always dead first thing in the morning Anyway one morning her and I were the only ones in the pub this song came on and I mentioned how I loved it as a kid so she turned it right up I’m having a ball listening to this and the outro comes on and I’m loving it then about a minute in at about 7.25 of the song she comes flying out of the bar and starts dancing like nobody is watching with the biggest smile on her face It was so cool seeing someone who’d never heard the song react that way to the outro which I’d always loved

She’s back in Mongolia now but I’ve still got contact with her I’m going to send her the link Thanks for posting this and bringing back a great memory

Great story. I think for me it was amazing as up until that point I'd only really been exposed to a lot of pop, whether it be pop-rock, synth-pop, new wave or even country and adult contemporary pop from my parents. So this was so different. Jazzy, prog-rock with Springsteen type lyrics and songs that went on for ages with all the guitar and keyboard instrumentation. It was a new development in mys music discovery. I also loved Private Investigations and Telegraph Road from the follow up album.

After this I next discovered Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd. I'll post about that in a separate post.

I sent her the song last night via messenger and about an hour later got a response saying how she remembered the song

It's amazing how you can remember the place and time when you discover a piece of music that has a personal impact on you. I'm glad you and your friend enjoyed it!

I saw New Order play at the Enmore theatre, it wasn't a good gig as it was plagued by tech problems.
Upbeat songs, but still sad lyrics.

                  • I will post some some songs when I get back but interesting driving up the M1 around the Lake Macquarie area and tuning in a Newcastle radio station as it's the only thing working sound system wise in the old car and they played Tropical Loveland by ABBA, apart from home I don't thing I have heard it on a radio station .well maybe not since 1976, it almost bought a tear to my eye.
Then last Sunday was having lunch on the balcony at the buffalo farm and they were playing lots of nice laid back tunes from George Michael, Phil Collins, Duran Duran , Kate Bush etc and then ABBAs Slipping Through My Fingers played, another rarely heard song from them, all was right with the world when I heard that song in such a beautiful setting.

I love that song too and New Order. What a bummer that the concert you saw was no good.

                        • I just posted this in another thread but thought I’d add it here I remember hearing this song in London I was working on a job at Canary Wharf overlooking the Thames. We were out on the balcony having a cigarette and talking when this song came on snd I went real quiet I’d been away for quite some time and hadn’t really missed home but the lyrics 2000 miles is very far through the snow made me miss home My boss asked me are you om you’ve gone quiet I answered yeah but that song made me miss home for the first time since I’d been away

                            • This lady disappeared from the public eye and stopped recording after 1988 after a bit of a solo career after ABBA stopped recording in 1982, there was silence from 1988 to 2004 where she was unfairly branded a recluse where in reality all she wanted was time away from music and people and have time to herself. Then in 2004 out of the blue she recorded an album of covers as she started to come back into the public eye again, bit by bit over the the coming years she was again more confident being in the public eye and started recording again, the last 10 years especially it seems nothing can hold her back now and she is enjoying life and music again more so than ever.

Anyway after 17 years of not recording and then this song was released, i cried when i heard the first note because i thought i would never hear this beautiful voice sing again.
