mainly i think it's a disease that can be kept at bay if people rigorously follow hygiene guidelines.
Sweden is about to go into lock down. They have acknowledged that herd immunity isn't working.

      Prove that with numbers?

Sweden has just over 1.06% of the population infected and VIC has 0.31% infected. Swedens case numbers are rising dramatically while VICs are decreasing.

Not sure what winning 'hands down' means where your from but its not this!

Sky News host Alan Jones says COVID-19 is not, and has never been, a pandemic. .

** I know people will be derisive of the source here, but he does have a point looking at those relatively low percentages...a pandemic?

I can understand the border closures (international) and protecting the vulnerable, rules of quarantine if you are sick, practising good hygiene etc.

But the broadbrush lockdowns and symbolic social distancing rules are way over the top, and the economic and social fabric damage are unnecessary casualties. With serious consequences **
Yes the same Alan Jones who kept telling his loyal elderly listeners that Covid was nothing to worry as he broadcasted in isolation from his luxury estate in the Southern Highlands. If we get a second wave in NSW you can be sure Jones & all of Sky News geriatric presenters will get themselves out of harms way while urging everyone else to go about their lives per usual.

Lucky we all are to be living in the greatest country on the planet. Our various governments response to Covid wasn't perfect but still very good. Look at the shit hole the USA has become....thank god thats not us.

Tone deaf is the term I would use. I was on the phone to my sister again and one of her husband's family is a psychologist dealing with back to back cases down in Melbourne assisting families who have lost members to suicide down there. The collateral damage and fallout is heartbreaking. Some people were just not born with the empathy gene.

Yes there is always going to be collateral damage in wide spread health emergencies. I have no doubt calls to Beyond Blue and the like have hit record levels. Psychologists/psychiatrists are in huge demand....could you imagine the demand for their services if you don't enforce a lockdown and Covid takes the lives of tens of thousands of people?

Paul Murray, one of Sky News ministers of propaganda, claimed a few weeks ago that Victoria had lost more people to suicide in the month of September in 2020 than that of the whole of 2019. The story went viral throughout all the social media platforms with people demanding Dan Andrews to step down. Of course his claim was false.....not even close to be true.....

Rightio You lot keep cowering in fear from this bad flu. I am out and about maskless shaking hands and hugging people ( selectively that is)living my life and completely healthy. It makes no sense to stop 99 percent of people living meaningful lives and to stop humans doing what is natural to them, to stop 1 percent from dying. All the while destroying economies, peoples livelyhoods and fcuking peoples mental health up in the process.

Well Australia has a population of 25 million, 19% are over the age of 60- which equals 4,750,000- vulnerable. Now we wont count all those under 60 who are sick with cancer, heart or respiratory disease etc- who are all very vulnerable. So if 1% of the 4,750,000 die that equals thats 47,500. Thats a lot of people whose families will have to deal with the fact that a loved one has died alone....and thats a lot of mental health issues that will follow that

Look no further than Newmarch House if you want a case study of what will happen if it gets into a nursing home. There are 1.2 million people in aged care. When you let the virus run wild you cant protect these people.

There is always going to be collateral damage. Yes the economy takes a hit- if you let it run wild and not shut down the economy still takes a hit. People wont leave the house if they know they may bring a fatal illness home. The RBA today issued a statement saying they believe the recession may be over. The road ahead will be tough, but we will fight back.

Check out WA. They turned in a 1.2 billion dollar surplus- and they have a hard border close. The WA residents are going about their day like normal. Premier McGowan has over a 90% approval rate for his handling of the virus thus far. The lesson is control the virus and it will lessen the impact on the economy, businesses and communitys

Personally i normally spend 3-6 months in Perth with my family- its a no go this year. When in Sydney i visit my old man in aged care at Chipping Norton 3 times a week-but its been locked down since March to all visitors. Well i look at it like this-my grandfather died in WW2- my wife lost family in WW1 & 2. My father in law has been mentally screwed after serving in Vietnam. Compared to the sacrifices they made what have i got to complain about?

Im proud of Australia & NZ's handling of Covid. If we get a second and third wave we will defeat it again. Lets hope for a vaccine because its the only way we will achieve herd immunity. In the interim i'm thanking God that my family and i are in Australia

Your post made me cry and it's not even 7am. Thank you for sharing and I have similar feelings. Normally at this time of year I'd be ready to go to Queensland to visit what is left of my dad's siblings and my cousins as he was a WWII veteran too and was the eldest. We usually have a 'Christmas' with me in November to avoid all the Gold Coast crowds during the actual holidays but not this year. I have one auntie age 91 recovering from a broken hip, one sister with breast cancer and one in country Victoria in her 70's with diabetes.I'm telling her not to send me anything for Christmas this year but to donate to a local Melbourne charity instead. Quite a few of my friends have buried parents this year (one in the Phillipines and he contracted the virus too), another friend had her mother in hospital in Mumbai with barely any staff available to take care of her as she had a broken shoulder, diabetes and the virus as well. Altogether, this year I've lost 2 of my school teachers, my childhood neighbour who was like a family member, my sister's mother in law who was like another mother to me, our cousin was the woman from Our Lady of Lebanon church who contracted the virus (she had spent decades volunteering out there and this is how she dies) and one of my best friends buried her mother too. Like you I am grateful for every measure taken possible to keep others safe, not sneer at them. And those statistics blithely quoted by some on here as 'only' this and 'only' that contain friends and family of our fellow countrymen. Just because you don't know them personally doesn't give you the right to diminish their existence. Some on here don't know what it's like to bury a child, parent or sibling..bring on 2021..can't wait for this year to be over..
