•
[QUOTE=The Skeez; Croatia isnt part of China.

Very timely reminder Skeez. All that talk of eating animals (some endangered) was getting depressing. From what I've seen and read in the media we are steadily denuding the oceans and we are probably one of the last generations that will be able to devour without limit, or forethought. Without wanting to open old wounds (and he is a comrade Chookster deserving respect) '08 is very prominent in the gluttony discussion putting away those fresh water Yabbies like there's no tomorrow - sounds like he's gone through half the population himself. The contradiction in that is that he has professed deep sympathy for the environment - I mean all of those thousands of Yabbies that have passed through his digestive system were once part of an ecological network.
Ya see, just sayin' you're a conservationist is nowhere near enough. There are thousands of blokes who think that more public transport is a great idea.....for the fella next door.
Said fresh water Cray's mate which are totally different to a yabbie , but if you talking yabbie they are in abundance, no worry about endangered species there .So I'm a guessing you are one of those vegans .Bless your little heart .please don't eat those steaks for they fart to the extreme those cattle do , the bane one the fanatic .And yes as said am all for the environment and plastics and polluting should be bought to a minimum ,.but am also a realist and know we have to keep using things like coal ECT until we do actually find a proper alternative. And yes I have solar .Grow my own vegies , don't litter and pollute as little as possible . Back to you old man , what do you do to help other then talk a lot

• You need to think more before uttering. Bagging people (and I'm not one of them unforch) who desist from joining in the pig out on other species is at odds with your own green claims. Likewise, your laudable conservation efforts are undermined by going along with that tripe about us needing fossil fuel until "we.....find a proper alternative. Who is going to announce that eventuality and put your mind at rest? Newscorp which has tried tirelessly to turn the environment into a Left/Right thing? Your favoured political party which has no emission reduction policy, is in thrall to mining interests and whose leader pulls lumps of coal stunts in the parliament?
You'd be waiting forever for "proper alternative" if you're relying on that lot. Don't you see the basic contradiction? They'll be dragged kicking and screaming toward renewables (which you already employ as it turns out) but yet you still vote for them? Another triumph of hope over experience or just simply rusted on?

• interesting piece on china here.
For years there have been warnings about Australia's overreliance on the Chinese market and the potential danger posed in the event of either an economic or political meltdown. That day has arrived and it's time for a Plan B, writes Ian Verrender.

Motherhood statements Zac. Far, far easier said than done. ASPI (the right wing anti China policy advice "institute" that gets a far wider hearing than it deserves - it is partially funded by munitions multi nationals and by the Libs) is always banging on about diversifying but there is plenty of competition for other markets and the China share of our exports can probably never be replaced it's so huge an element in our trade balance.
If the Libs were serious about ideological purity they would suspend all mineral exports to China forthwith.
On another note I see that A NSW Unions investigation has found more and wider wage theft from people on working visas. Now there's an Aussie value that we can be proud of - the Fair Go. Some wage earners on here actually support that.

• For God sake old mate , instead of continually telling us what's wrong with this great country can you tell us if there is anything right with it , and if not why not just leave , or have you never actually been here

you're not going to find a comparable trading partner to china but you can do stuff to develop trade with other nations. the more we do that, the more china is likely to return to the table and act sensibly (because that is in their interest).

no doubt some of our leaders could have done better in dealing with china but china is waging a concerted trade war against us which is aimed more at showing their strength than protecting legitimate interests.

• Both of those points are moot. It was we who started the whole trade standoff thing with the ban on Huawei (we have the dubious honour of being first to ban though the US (Trump) was undoubtedly the urger). Added to that there has been a consistent inclination emanating from the Lib right wing (together with a couple of Labor rightists - they all call themselves "The Wolverines", google it) to be more strident ideologically. People like Abetz whose uncle Otto was the SS gaultier in occupied France and sent hundreds of Jews to to extermination). Following Huawei, there was a long list (far longer than China's) of anti Dumping accusations and, of course, the other megaphone stuff that these mugs who now run the place, go in for. The idea that Australia can influence China to do anything at all is laughable - it is rapidly becoming THE global power with aspirations to lead the world.
Communism has never been a bogey man nor has it ever been aggressive. Norman Mailer called it "humanity's highest ideal". The real aggressor, the world over, is and has been, the USA which consumes 40% of the World's natural resources and aims to keep it that way.

• we're in the same part of the world as china and they're here to stay so we should try to get on well with them. their proximity offers us opportunities as well as dangers (to say any great power, be it communist or not, doesn't have the potential to be a bogeyman is naive).

we want to get on well with them but we want to do it in a way that is good for us, not bad for us. we can influence china - if we treat them with self-interested respect rather than ideological lack of respect that would be a good change and would influence their behaviour towards us

• All true enough and that is all that they want. China endured 150 years of Imperialist occupation and they would, reasonably, resent the little white Asian yapping dog doing the bidding of the US (whose "way of life" is underpinned by Chinese money which, clearly, the US would like to avoid paying back). Not only is China critical of us, most of Asia is - we criticise their laws and their cultures including Islam, we invade them - Korea, Vietnam, and Indonesia (during Konfrontasi). We oppose Indonesia's reclaiming of Timor L'Este with the sole intention of stealing their gas and, all round we have the hard earned rep of being arrogant, patronising, high handed bullies. No other Asian nation is on China's case in the self defeating way that we are, not even Japan.
Keating talked about "security IN Asia" as opposed to "security FROM Asia" and that was the sensible way to a prosperous future but the ratbag religious zealots in "The Wolverines" and the Anglophile establishment who think that the glory days of trade with Britain can be revisited after Brexit are holding the floor courtesy of Murdoch. I doesn't help that a large section of the population is racist into the bargain.

• Have to remember though the main reason they are behaving like the schoolyard bully to us, is our leader dared to suggest where the costly virus originated and was dispersed from. Good on him.

We need some rhetoric and symbolism to distinguish western democratic societies from totalitarion regimes where freedoms are curtailed. Ask the many Chinese now domicile in the land of the free, where they would rather live now and why.

Yes use them to a trading mutual advantage but dont be too reliant on them.

Its not ideology to make that distinction it 's just a fact. We arent a communist ruled country thank the Lord.

When war breaks out it wont be the Chinese helping us it will be the Stars and Stripes.

If you give bullies too much ground, you lose your soul.
