South Korea, America should just let Nth Korea have them.
Ditto Japan. They want to choose China over America, let them get bullied by China.
I don’t think it’s a matter of taking “sides” and I certainly think everyone knows there will be no winners in nuclear war or even a trade war

The EU won’t let China or The WHO off the hook- nor they should. This can’t be allowed to happen again and the world will need answers.

How you go about it is the complex question when juggling your own fragile economy. Certainly no country wants to get behind Trump when it’s obvious everything he says and does ( or not say or do) is about the November election. Sorry it’s not a good enough reason. He never wanted to shut down the US economy- he was more than willing to sacrifice the lives of his own people to not put a dent in in re-election campaign. Takes a certain kind of person to be like that- and it’s certainly not one you want to get into bed with

62 countries now standing with Australia. EU found some bottle.
Xi has agreed to an inquiry, but after the pandemic is over.

The Federal Agriculture Minister has confirmed he has been unable to speak with his Chinese counterpart on the eve of an expected tariff being formally imposed on Australian barley.

They would go play golf and let the cards fall where they may.

Keep calm and carry on, let China decide what's it's going to do.
Chasing people who obviously don't like you and don't want anything to do with you, is a very big waste of time and energy.

Wait til China slaps tariffs on our exports, then react... by media release only.
Two can play the no-talkies game.
As it's no good being a slave, it's no good being a sucker either.

No country had endorsed what he said...nor have pulled funding for The WHO- the world was united to start investigations into the pandemic when all was under control. Just because Trump has divided his own country doesn't mean he can do it with the whole world- the Europeans have made it very clear that they are going to unite to get through all this.
Is it arrogant to highlight part of my own post?

As i said the Europeans still will want answers from China-and they had united to do so. So Australia has joined- and thats the right move. Theres strength in unity and the Europeans are too smart to start BS trade wars to get answers.

What i was unhappy about was Australia joining the unhinged Trump on the matter. No way- we have too much to lose. 45 billion surplus is a win for Australia.....and i still want to see Australia takes China's money.....and certainly not have our farmers & primary producers suffer in the process.

Let Trump go alone and handle China- lets see how far he can get

So, today China has slapped an 80% tariff on Australia's barley exports.
Not the action of a friend.

Australia is 'very disappointed', and is thinking of complaining to the WTO.
No need, it should just increase the export price of its iron ore, coal, and gas exports to China by 10%, citing "increased production costs".

          https://www.macrobusiness.com.au/202...xport-tariffs/

Australia should fight China with export tariffs

The Australian Government should respond in kind with the threat of a 10% export tariff on iron ore, coking coal and natural gas.

Australia is the dominant global supplier of these commodities, which are essential to China’s economic development.

Shanghai | China says it will buy more American barley and Russian beef as part of previously agreed trade deals in a blow for Australian exports facing restrictions due to political tensions between Beijing and Canberra.

Barley imports from the United States to China would be effective from this week, according to a notice on the China Customs website.

The deal was part of China's agreement to buy an additional $US200 billion ($310 billion) in additional American goods and services under a trade deal.

China also this week suspended beef exports from four Australian abattoirs.

"US barley products have similar quality levels to Australian barley which is replaceable.
It is a shame that Australia is losing its competitive advantage in beef and barley," said Lin Guofa, an analyst with consulting firm Bric Agriculture Group.[/I]

              It is a shame.
Oh well, we can't compete with the big guys.
We'll just have to increase the price of iron ore, coal and gas exports to China by 10%. as compensation.
              And review our universities.

              Russian beef?
That means there'll be good quality Australian meat for us to buy here.

We don't need to import cars from China...dealers here can sell something else.
We don't need China ambassadors here anymore either, obviously.

It's a very tenuous situation and China is definitely behaving like the schoolyard bully.

The PM was completely within his rights to lead a call for an inquiry into the cause of the deaths and economic destruction worldwide from the new virus. We should be proud of such strong leadership in the face of a crisis.

Now their Embassy has called Australias claimed vindication of the inquiry being agreed to as "a joke". Sounds a bit petty Betty? We have definitely hit a nerve.

                    How dare we??

Well thats the dare isn't it......increase the price on iron ore or something else. Is our government ready to play that game with our economy? As the late Kenny Rogers used to sing " you got to know when hold them, know when to fold them.....". Lets see which way we go.

BB i get the feeling you think that we are doing the Chinese a massive favour taking on their students at our universities. The worst possible outcome is they stop their students from coming. It will see the Australian government having to fork out billions every year but realistically they wont it & plenty of universities will close.....and the remaining will be operating on a limited budget. I again point out Phase 3 of re-opening our economy and the possible lifting of restrictions for international travel for students....thats to accommodate the Chinese students & their fat wallets

Australian beef is the best! Go to Woolworths, Aldi & Coles and its all Australian beef. Unfortunately thats not enough to keep afloat thousands of jobs that are now in jeopardy.

What cars do we import from China? Great Wall Motors? If anyone stupid enough to buy that rubbish?

You suggesting we send the Chinese ambassador home? Wow that would be ballsy!!

China Embassy Ridicules Australia the headline today.

Maybe they should be doing that from over in Beijing...instead of here while breathing our fresh air.
It will never happen of course. Australia has its head bowed and is compliant as usual.

Cars? An 80% tariff wouldn't go astray.

A relatively new addition to the count? China. While the past couple of decades have seen China send only a relative handful of cars to the Australian market, the recent launch of brands like Haval, MG and LDV are beginning to see the needle shift dramatically.

So far in 2018, Chinese brands have been responsible for 4399 vehicles sold in Australia, all of them built in China. That's a significant increase on 2017 alone, when just 2390 vehicles came here from China.

Australia won't retaliate against China barley tariffs as minister says 'there is no trade war'

Victorian barley grower and chair of Grain Producers Australia Andrew Weidemann said farmers were "gutted" by China's decision to impose the tariffs that "stop the trade completely".

                              #####

Not only the barley, it's beef too, and whatever else China decides.
Might as well just fly the flag of China over parliament house in Canberra.

i think the govt is right to separate the decision to block our barley from china's protest re us calling for an enquiry into the start of covid19 (even though they're clearly related). hopefully china becomes sensible and looks for a good relationship with us and buys stuff from us that we want to sell to them.

not sure why we had to be the instigator of calls for an enquiry (even though one definitely had to be called). like they say in the army - don't volunteer for anything.

it's in our best interests to have a good relationship with china (ask the barley farmers) and we should be hard but fair with them.
