  • I was on a Chinese funeral today.
Very very respectable people. We were all given a white envelope with $50 inside.

    • [QUOTE=zac; maybe but sounds a bit like holding a gun to our own head and threatening to shoot.

Too right Zac and it is to be hoped that most on this site see that. The usual suspects will never and, horrifyingly, they are representative of the disconnected 85% who have no real interest in much at all.

What we are seeing now is a monumental fcuk up by the Right wing in Australia which is now scrambling to divert attention by hurling abuse at China. Regardless of the fact that China's purchase of our minerals and agricultural products underwrite out prosperity Australia, which has no enemies set about creating one. First, at the urging of Trump, we ordered 240 billions worth of ICBs capable of hitting the mainland, we wholeheartedly participate in US military planning in Asia, we join in anti China alliance building and we go in for bull horn criticism of Chinese domestic affairs. We have also contributed to the 400 bases Eurasia, the Pacific and Asia that ring China like a noose. The US missile system in South Korea (THAAD) is squarely aimed at China across the straits.

When I say "we" I mean the Right which "leads" us. Mostly our bellicose postures are aimed at putting the frighteners on the local population - the Yellow Peril thing which always works for the Tories because ingrained colonial racism is an easy thing to revive and generating fear is their most effective political weapon. Now, however, there has been a massive overplaying of the hand, we've been called out and now face grim economic prospects indeed.

And why? Nations act only in their own interests but where do our interests lie in all this needless provocation of the hand that feeds us? A Fascistic Right has always been dominant here, look no further than British Imperialism and, now, aided by a compliant if not mendacious media, they've gone looking for trouble in the hope that China would just regard us (as the World does) as insignificant and a minor irritant while their aggro bullshit would play out a treat electorally.

Well they've over egged it massively. People on this site who cling to the fiction that China needs us (the Murdoch line) are deluded. Our coal is 5% of their import - that trump card is a fiction along with all of the whistling in the dark about alternative markets. There are none nearly as big. Any replacement will take ages, if ever.

Don't buy this blame them ploy, The US fixated Right here has created this mess, no one else. The irony is that they'll fool us once more - how can people forget WMDs so quickly?

        • Oh dear...now reports that large numbers of Chinese left without electricity with a serious lack of coal power available since their controversial stand against Australia.

Cmon gee gee pong swallow your pride. A dictator of one country isnt necessarily a dictator to the world.

          Apparently.

          • Howard sent us to Iraq on the specious WMD lie. Unlike Blair, whom Murdoch pilloried to electoral defeat after himself being the warmonger whose media helped to bring the whole thing about, Little Winston bore no such rancorous criticism from News Ltd, in fact he prospered electorally. That's down to the cynical treatment of the Left compared to the Right by Murdoch. Little Winston had fascist tendencies make no mistake
            - Nationalistic, a persecutor of the indigenous, hatred of Unions. His father and grandfather, protestant products of Northern Ireland, both signed on to fight for the Empire in WW1.

Pleez Jaxie, enough of your News/ Sky unhinged "reports" (if they even exist - the "reports' that is). Clearly it's all hands on deck at News Ltd. now to deflect from the looming catastrophe that faces the Right and for which Murdoch is largely responsible.
Yeah, right, we're gonna teach 'em not to fcuk with us. China has singled us out, as any great power would, as an example to others who might be pressured by the US to join in their anti China jehad. The Right here is, once more and along with Britain, the most slavish ally of the American Empire but is highly dependent on China economically. On the other hand, China has little need or use for us economically - Australia represents a fraction of their balance of trade so, of all of their trade partners, we are the ideal patsies to serve as an example and an encouragement to others to ditch the US bullhorn and it will work, no doubt. Other "whitey" nations will comply with the US for a bit but then their national interests will prevail especially with us as an example.
The tragic irony is that most of this has been generated by a US citizen, no longer, and not for 30 years, an Australian. He is the most egregious example of Foreign Interference in this country his loyalty being to the US - the home of his fortune - and our "Intelligence" agencies should be on his case big time. LOL!
And haha, the Lib voting Northern Beaches have blown Scummo's "All home for Xmas" election winner. News will need to junk all of their celebratory copy. Maybe they can blame China? And, of course, they will.

                      • the reason why we trade with china is cos it's in our interest - they're a big economy, relatively close to us and give us a lot of money for a lot of things we produce. same deal for china - they buy our goods cos its in their interest - they get quality goods from a reliable supplier.

it's breaking down cos of bs ideology on both sides. both sides suffer from its breakdown and it needs to get fixed

Your wise old owl days are over buddy. You got nuthin' but that patriotism shite and a dubious association with a working class sport. If I've told you'n 08 once, I've told you a hundred times, name calling doesn't cut it man. You got NUTHIN'!
This country, once highly susceptible to global capitalist boom'n'bust, has enjoyed decades of growth and prosperity and has weathered every recession including the GFC catastrophe. The reason for all of that - CHINA! Is this history's greatest own goal?
News' huff'n'puff about going to the WTO will come to nothing because those involved have form for shoddiness - trading with Saddam, numerous breaches of live exports - and, always someone else's fault, courtesy of News Ltd.
Our Government is not "us" - 50% of us would want to see them gone. We aren't all in this together, we are divided. This cabal of God bothering ideological zealots with no policies on anything important has been imposed on us largely by a monopoly media appealing to Aussie indifference.

                            I get that mate.

I do like to let him talk usually without commenting as the more he speaks the more damage he does to his cause. Bit like a Greens pollie. Sometimes he lets up a good one liner for me which can be hard to resist.

In the season of goodwill for all though I can see a greater peace with the good old block play.
