  • Footy forum grammar!!!!!

Seriously, if you are a slight grammar police, a footy forum is the place to totally screw with your OCD. I don't like to correct people as it's a bit elitist even though my parents hardly speak English and I went to a public school in the Western Suburbs! I know they changed the way grammar was taught at school since my days (finished year 12 in 1986) but some of the basics kill me on footy forums..

Here are the couple of classic I always see.... please add, as this is a light post poking fun at my own OCD rather than others! (You are all probably vetting this post now to hammer me!! My girlfriend always does, so feel free)

    - His instead of he's.....his a good bloke!!!
    - Of instead of 've.... He should of taken a shot....

I can understand laziness with apostrophes etc especially when typing on phones, and auto correct can be annoying!

Lol, isn't that being too 'spelling correct'?
I think your and you're get mixed up a lot. I find auto-correct most annoying when posting on a device. It amazes me sometimes the words it thinks you're trying to use when you make a slight typo.

Agree with your and you're. Not sure if it was deliberate but someone wrote on here this season will always have an asteroid (as opposed to asterisk) next to it.
With auto correct on my phone I once sent a text thanking someone for sending me a 'tatts' ticket - it defaulted to' tarts', try it .
"Do you expect me to talk"? "No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die".

Nicola Tesla you really need to watch this.....

Grammar has changed so much over the last 30 years. I got a Bachelor of Education which i completed in 1993 & completed a degree in Arts in 1999. 2 years ago i decided to go back to uni and started a degree in psychological science. Essay writing was my strength back then.....well i got a rude shock after the first couple i submitted. Since when can you start a sentence with "and" "but" or "or"??? Now you can start a sentence with a conjunction & in some cases it's preferable??? Luckily i've discovered Studiosity which is a service that proof reads essays before handing them in.

Must of, should of, would of, could of....instead of the "'ive"
I still get there & their mixed up
        Your and you're

Some of my favourites....( not necessarily bad grammar but just wrong!).....

Worse comes to worse...... instead of worse comes to worst
Tow the line ....instead of toe the line
Extract revenge ......instead of exact revenge ( no one believes me when i correct them)
Throws of passion....instead of throes of passion
        Make due....instead of make do
        Deep seeded....instead of deep-seated
        Shoe-in .....instead of shoo-in

You are right...my girl friend is 10 years younger than me and her parents both teachers....we have this conversation often. She didn't learn grammar/spelling at school in the way I did.
But really, typing on a phone or even a quick forum message on laptop doesn't require perfection...I'm never perfect!
It's just hard to look at when you are old like me!
I do like those sayings you listed, some of which I never knew which was correct or not.

tbh incorrect grammar/spelling on a footy forum doesn't worry me. you're dealing with people from diff backgrounds, diff intelligence and diff education levels and i like to concentrate on what people mean more than how they say it.

i find it more interesting how people use words differently. it's like we think we're all speaking the same language but we're actually not. everyone has their own dictionary. i have a theory that if people were more diligent at trying to understand what other people mean rather than jumping to wrong conclusions human history would have been different.

I'm possibly one of the worst on here for spelling , Grammer and the like , I appreciate that Nicola is not having a go at anyone but many on here do , as is there right to do so but personally think there are much greater issues going on in the world to sweat the small insignificant stuff

I don't have spell check on my phone & the missus says she has to send my messages to NASA to work out. These days it doesn't matter.....and actually peoples styles can be interesting. Sometimes i got to read Paddo Colts post 3 times because , depending on the day, he wont use full stops or commas, he will use a heap of full stops and commas & he doesn't do paragraphs. Thats ok- it's his style.

Sometimes its good to stop thinking about issues of the world- especially this year

Here's my personal favourites when it comes to examples of poor spelling and grammar. No prizes for guessing the name of the twit who tweeted them. Think "Bunker Bitch" or "Cadet Bone Spurs"

"After having written many best selling books, and somewhat priding myself on my ability to write, it should be noted that the Fake News constantly likes to pore over my tweets looking for a mistake. I capitalize certain words only for emphasis, not b/c they should be capitalized!"

"Ted Cruz is totally unelectable, if he even gets to run (born in Canada). Will loose big to Hillary. Polls show I beat Hillary easily! WIN!"

"How low has President Obama gone to tapp my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!"

" I am honered, to serve you, the great American People, as your 45th President of the United States"

" No dream is too big, no dream is to great"

" Our great country is has been divided for decades. Sometimes you need to protest in order to heel, & we will heel, & be stronger than ever before"

"China steals United States Navy research drone in international waters – rips it out of water and takes it to China in unpresidented act"

I don't think anyone should correct others, it's just being elitist or elevating yourself at others expense. We all have our issues somewhere in life. As you picked up, this thread is more about little things that my OCD picks up that I giggle at myself for........I had a girlfriend who always made comments on others spelling/grammar etc, and I'd point out that some people may be extremely intelligent or successful but English isn't their first language or parents language or they just mightn't have good grammar etc but still are successful..... Then I subtly remind her that she isn't exactly a Rhodes scholar and quite frankly had no real qualifications or skill working in a mundane job.....but she was HOT AS haaaaaa!! Needless to say, we ain't together.
