So I dont wanna be a dipshit wower and I know I preach this a lot.....and saying DON'T BAN them.

Having been an addict...its embarrassing to admit but yep an addict I know 1st hand the dangers that these mongrel machines can cause. They were bloody design and built to be addictive, this aint by chance.

I dont say ban these things but simple stuff like limiting the max bet to maybe $1 or $2. Atm you can bet $10 or sometimes $20 a spin.....that's crazy shit. I know cause I've done it.

One Friday last year after work I took out $200 and over a few hours got that near $4k, I walked out that night with nada, zip donut. Sure down to me, but you're in that zone man where you think FMD I can get this to $6 or $7k.

Man I'm still in debt, fine, got my kids again talking to me and sure I'm an addict but I don't wanna go back to those shit days. FMD the days I lost at that Taj Mahal of a club feeding in $50 and at the end walking out depressed, how to pay my bills ?

All I'm saying is man if you enjoy a punt on them great but my message I guess is be real careful of the warning signs because for some folk they can be life destroying.

      Cheers Zac.

Man I bang on about this a lot because it's a passion for me. I dont wanna see anybody end up a degenerate addict like me. Even high profile players have been caught by these bastard machines.

They employ psychs to help them make te things addictive, FACT. And a certain % get addicted. These days I'm happy with my Mon, Wed & Sat lotto.

All I wanna do is let folk know that for some people they can ruin your life o for that minority go easy, be disciplined, leave your ATM card behind and dont chase losses. The pain ain't worth it. But hey chucking in a 50 or 100 with your pals having some fun, sweet.

But sitting there for hours and hours, lying about where your're going, blowing your wages....thats fcked. But these things are called the CRACK of GAMBLING....and we are losing more dollars every year. They cause social problems that we can only guess how much but it,s growing......and dont wait for govts to help you cause they are addicted to the income.

      It's all down to you.

I think you are right. Those machines are farking evil. A curse on our society. I have never been addicted to gambling but I have felt its seduction.

gambling's like drinking - for some it's alright but for others it's better if they go cold turkey.

i knew a guy who worked for a syndicate who bet on the races with an aim to get a return of 3 or 4% on any given meeting and he spent all day putting numbers into a computer. that worked and he made money but no more than if he got any other job.

i like horse racing, like the strappers who set the alarm for 3 in the morning and go off to work cos they love horses and some of the characters in the game but i've got better things to do with my money than betting on horses. sick of being sold dud tips.

i used to spend $20 a week on scratchies but after a few years of not winning anything big and an analysis of the odds i gave that up and spent the money on a better cut of steak and the like.

i bet on the league with sports tab for a while and had a few hundred on us at about $8 to win the comp in 2002 so that was good, but lost more than that in subsequent years.

these days when people tell me of a win i say - 'must be nice to get some back'.

financial accounts for these top 25 clubs – which includes Dee Why RSL, Dooleys Catholic Club, Mounties and a raft of other leagues and RSL clubs, mostly in Sydney’s West – shows donations of $24.2 million, or around 1.8 per cent of their poker machine profits.

Fine but the social damage they cause is way way bigger man than the squirts of piss they chuck back.

Also have a think these things are designed by psychs, behavioural scientists and other super brains to be addictive. That's no secret. I been scratching my head and trying to think about another thing that's been made to deliberately be addictive.

Look if you're at the boozer and get legless they dont keep serving up drinks to you. But pokies and trust me cause I know they can bleed you and nobody at any of these joints give a toss.

I worked part time in the late 80s early 90s at Mounties for 6 years- my first job. Ive seen first hand the damage these things could do even back then. They will fcuk your life up if they get the better of you. Clubs/pubs will talk shit about responsible gambling but they know the problem gambler is where they cash in. State governments are addicted to the revenue.

The addiction part isnt rocket science. Poker machines are specifically designed to target our dopamine receptors in the brain. The positive re-enforcements in sound/music with any win/collect, the on screen positive re-enforcements and the thrill of chasing a feature...all combine to give you a cocaine type hit- & theres the addiction. How this can be allowed by governments is ethically & morally corrupt. People don't play pokies...they play you!

Good on you HDTONE for giving them away. Don't let them fcuk your life

The thing that surprises me is how socially acceptable and normal they are. When someone suggest to me that I play a slot machine I am genuinely shocked that the person is stupid enough to play them.

The thing is only speaking for me, I was stupid. You get suck in and then try chasing loses.

I cannot tell you how much better I feel, depression, anger ( mostly cause I'm an angry prick) are gone. I can now buy necessities and am working on clearing my credit card debts. I'm no hero but just a bloke that took too long to wake up and see the damage....not so much financial but family. Imagine my adult kids calling me like 6 or 7 times pleading with me to leave and I wouldn't because that big win was coming.
I hated myself for so long, wondered if life was worth living but thank God that is past.
