  • Around 75% of the Roosters squad have had or are currently dealing with covid

Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson has hit back at complaints from NRL players over the competition’s reintroduced Covid-19 restrictions for players.

Almost every NRL team has been hit heavily by the latest outbreak of Covid-19 across the country, including 16 Broncos players and 22 Titans players testing positive in recent weeks.

The competition earlier this month enforced level one protocols, barring players from entering the indoor areas of pubs and clubs as well as a number of other measures. Most controversially, it required any visitors attempting to enter the home of a player or staff member under the restrictions to provide a negative rapid antigen test first – a troublesome requirement given the present difficulties of obtaining those tests.

The tightened rules sparked widespread player unrest, with a number of top stars including Latrell Mitchell, Jack Wighton and Jordan Rapana sharing their complaints to social media.

But Robinson told SEN 1170 that he had not heard of any complaints from his Roosters players since the club resumed training last week – and said the restrictions ‘aren’t the end of the world’.

“Everyone knows it’s jumped on us over the last few weeks … this isn’t about as a 20-year-old: ‘how come we can’t go to a nightclub?’,” the Roosters mentor told SEN.

“We know we’ve got vaccinations but we’ve also got to look after the elderly and the vulnerable for a period of time.

“We know we’ve just got to go through this for however many weeks or months with some small restrictions.”

Robinson said his players had accepted the mandate from the NRL.

“I have not heard one complaint about the restrictions I’ve heard nothing, not one complaint, not one question,” he stated.

“They’ve just gone ‘okay, that’s what we’ve got to do’.

“Everyone can see what’s in front of us at the moment.

“We received [the message from the NRL], we passed it on [to the players] and we’re going about adhering to them and we’ll just keep training.

“I don’t see it as a big deal at the moment. You can go to a restaurant but just sit outside, is that the end of the world in summer?”

The Sydney mastermind also opened up on the stunning extent of the cases in his side.

“As a percentage, we would have about 75 per cent that have had it or are going through it (either Covid-19 or close-contact isolation) at the moment,” Robinson said.

“Out of 36, we had 11 training on the first day back after pre-season but also a couple of those guys have had it earlier in Christmas.

“It’s cool, it’s not different to what everyone else is going through.

“Life’s not back to normal for us – we’ve got different guys coming in and out every day – but we’ll just keep surging ahead with our training.”

I support Latrell on his indigenous stuff but TBH this is one reason why I don't miss him. We don't need outspoken players who are constantly putting our club into the spotlight as being the face behind various gripes and agendas.

Robbo articulates it beautifully here... it's not about being kids who are only thinking about themselves.

Jack Wighton should be thanking his lucky stars he's even playing NRL and not in jail after his violent attacks on innocent passers by in Canberra. But politically correct madness allowed him to be judged and sentenced by "community elders" instead of the Courts like the rest of us. As for Mitchell and Rapana - perhaps the 2 most putrid individuals in the comp. The 3 of them have the combined IQ of one regular person. You'd think they'd be a bit grateful not to be stacking shelves or collecting trolleys. But no.

I think this is good news. If those in the squad who are yet to have Covid catch it then we should be in a good position for the whole squad to build natural immunity and have a relatively smooth season.

Im no expert however in my opinion, the problem with herd immunity lies in assuming that this virus won't mutate significantly and that we might not have a very significant variant roaming our streets that has nothing to do with omicron, which does not receive any natural immunity from those who are already sick with it. I also think we will see surges throughout winter-especially the back end months.

Lets just hope it dies out soon. Im sick of the Big Bash and need some Rooster action soon!

Entitled little A-holes. I’d love Mitchell to live in the shoes of somebody who has a real job or someone who has lost a real job. Maybe he could take a walk around a COVID ward. I really am glad this upstart no longer represents our great club.

Natural immunity has never worked in the history of modern man. It didn't work for Polio, Measles, Chicken Pox or Tuberculosis to name a few.

And for example look at Djokovic. He has had COVID twice.

Maybe I am using the wrong terms. What I mean is that after you have Covid-19 you will be left with strong anitibodies. The doctors I am listening to suggest that the anitibodies a person gains from having Covid-19 give much stronger protection than the vaccines. There also seems to be data that suggests the vaccines are actually more dangerous to a person that has already had Covid-19.

The experts seem to have changed their minds that you can now catch it more than once so I am not sure if that makes my point redundant.

I thought we all understood that once we got vaccinated the virus would be allowed to move through society in order to end it.

Also just want to point out that like most people I have no idea, just trying to piece things together like everyone else.

Totally agree with you but I like the culture that Robinson has created is just get on with the job regardless of the obstacles. Teams like the Raiders with a a coach that complains about everything there is is no wonder his players are on social media whinging about the restrictions and Latrell is a professional victim.

also just got told that no need for the booster shot for at least 3 months after you have tested positive.

it keeps changing which makes it more confusing.

Exactly. I've tried to avoid a lot of conversations about Covid for just that reason. Not to mention the media's role in this thing. In the USA the split between the news from CNN and Fox is mind boggling.

Covid is next to zero threat to fit young professional footballers so the sooner they get it the better. That way they won't spend valuable weeks on the sideline during the season as they are very unlikely to get Covid again for the foreseeable future.

It’s not up to them though, it’s up to the laws that they have to abide by and which states will impose tougher restrictions.

Has the bolded part been confirmed?

after having it for the last week, I have been told:

                              1. No need for a booster shot for 3months.

                              2. You can get it again within 30 days of your last symptoms.

                              3. there is no need to isolate if you are a close contact again unless you feel symptoms)

4.RAT tests are only accurate 1/3 tests( is this now becoming a cash cow?

if there are new mutations of the current few that are going around, I’m not sure what the next few months have to bring.

just gotta go with the flow and not look to far into the future and hope the season goes uninterrupted.
