Surely an Australian Republic can't be too far off now that the arguments against by the Anglophile power elites that have run the joint since the get go become less and less plausible. A foreigner as our Head of State, how cringeworthy? The younger generations won't cop that for much longer.
A great curtain raiser to that event might be replacing England by Night with the newly freed up Land Rights flag. It's OUR flag now. Its colours symbolise the essence of Australia and its adoption would do more than anything else to show the world that we are serious about reconciliation with our First Nations people. Besides all of that it's a great looking thing, simple but dramatic.

In that daft model the Pollies pick the candidates and voters have no choice on this and you know what will happen there - nepotism - Anyone can nominate as a candidate for council/state/ territorial and federal elections but not for the HOS.

I also think constitutionally it is not possible for State and Territorial Governments to nominate candidates under the separation of powers between Federal and State/Territorial Governments for HOS and other sections of the Constitution including State and Territory Constitutions.
