As I said also before the black and white films about the West which were from the depression period but passed off as the way the West currently lives.
Also the fact that all phone calls were recorded and transcribed and that you had to be very very careful in what you said on the phone and also in normal discussions with anyone as one never knew who was KGB/Secret Police and or an Informant.
All those Soviet Block countries did that and all had their secret police as well plus kept files on most if not all citizens.
The Work Camps ( Gulag Archipelago) still existed into the 1980's as well.
Your are pretty naive when it comes to Authoritarianism and Totalitarian regimes though one has to say especially with your incessant praise of them and the fact that you have never been to any countries where they exist or most likely know anyone that lived under such regimes.
My next post will be about my travels to Eastern Europe for 9 weeks in 1987 - I was only on that trip because an older Brother asked me to go as their tour group needed x amount of people for it to go ahead as a few had dropped out.
Sure yes i would go - he only told me a few days before departure that the accommodation would involve camping sites and youth hostels and also that you had to pay money into the food kitty each day and also take your turn preparing and cooking the meals and washing up etc.
Anyway it was very interesting 9 weeks - mid August to late October
