  • Minus Russian propaganda, what's the real story on the Ukraine?

Vlad's got some halfwit nonsense about the Ukraine being run by nazis and there being a need to reunite some fabled kingdom of his (all complete bollocks but not atypical of an expansionary dictatorship's propaganda, trying to create a story about glorious times that they want to bring back). Further, his media outlets show cartoons of parties and celebrations when the Russian tanks showed up in Kyiv (in stark contrast to the reality in which civilians are losing their houses and getting killed). Retro gamers out there are particularly angry as Krikzz (creator of the Everdrive) is now outta business indefinitely thanks to Vlad the Impaler.

A bit of a Dorothy here, but is it true that Russia's invaded a country with a democratically elected government, there's no nazis (aside from Russia trying to replicate their invasion of Poland) and literally the whole world (ignoring Russia & North Korea for a minute) opposes this act of aggression?

Just bumping to make it clear Russia's the only place spreading dangerous propaganda about the war they've started.

Wish it wasn't ay. This and using various banned weapons on civilians. What they are doing is disgusting.

I don't wish failure upon countries and their people but I hope the economic shocks lead to Vlad's downfall. He can turn off the internet and torture protestors, but he's digging himself a grave by doing so.

Please read the critique of The ABC's and other media coverage of the war on johnmenadue.com. It'a current affairs site with contributions from ex highest rank public servants, diplomats and professors. No wonder you feel the way that you do when your sole source is the MSM.

Point me to the media i should be sourcing for what is going on with the Russia and Ukraine. Johnmenadue.com. is happy to rubbish the coverage of the events with certain news outlets but they don't say " look at this coverage for a balanced view". Where should we be looking??

Ridiculous and, frankly, disappointing, -Ism. First, name calling and general cancel stuff as a substitute for debate and now puerile labelling - "Commo stooge" stuff - but there you go , cognitive dissonance usually manifests itself in that way - denial and ad hominem denigration of the opposition. Jeez all that stuff goes against all that is precious in Rugba League - fairness, playing the ball not the man, accepting setback graciously, Mateship FFS.

Elsewhere, cancel took the form of the Souths supporter label which surprised me given your calling. I presume that you were referring to the Sam Burgess matter last year? Now that was a David and Goliath situation if there ever was one. There, powerful interests attempted to destroy a relatively weak individual and you went along with that - no scepticism, no circumspection just mob conformity. All that you could see was red & green nd you were wrong in that matter too.

You didn't answer my question.....where do i go to to find a balanced view of the daily events?

I see the media report the bombing of a maternity ward being bombed and its followed by vision of pregnant women being led away from the hospital......and then the Russians say its fake news and the images and videos of the event was played out by actors. Really???

Don't know but if anyone's mastered the dark arts of misinformation it's the yanks.

The Maidan protests in 2014 saw people in the crowds shot by snipers but subsequent forensic research indicates that the sniper activity emanated from the headquarters of the Ultra Right opposition not from the embattled government which was blamed in the media. Do we just dismiss that?
Though embattled, it was an elected government with a pro Russian inclination - because it was the government means that a majority of Ukraine had voted for it. I see a lotta media skullduggery in that.

So you don't know where to find a balanced news source for what's happening daily in the Ukraine....but you do know that the media coverage now is one sided based on events like that of the Maidan Revolution?? So the obvious question is where are you getting your information from to form the views you have....because if its all based on a hunch then what you actually have is just a conspiracy theory.

Re the Maidan Revolution- In 2014 the Ukrainian government voted in favour of a free trade agreement with the EU. Now for "some reason" the Ukrainian President decided he would override that and instead sign the agreement with Russian aligned Eurasian Union. Knowing how Russia works it was obvious to the people of Ukraine that the president had bowed down to pressure from Russia, so they took it to the streets protesting for months. The President responded by making protests illegal, which when you look at whats happening to the anti war protests in Russia today, it pretty obvious where he got that idea from! That decision to make protests illegal just poured fuel on the fire....and the Ukrainian president fled to surprise surprise Russia, where he was very much welcomed and still resides today. Easy to see the protesters were right about where the presidents loyalty lay

Of course if the then Ukrainian president had executed the will of the parliament, and that of the people, and signed the free agreement with the EU then you wouldn't even have to debate on where and who fired bullets in the protests.

Its also very obvious by the events of the last 2 weeks that the Ukrainians are never going to accept the Russians on their land. When they capture Kiev their battle has just begun.
Putin has miscalculated the strength of the commitment within the members of the EU and in fact he has made them even more unified to each other. Further to that they are even more committed to decreasing their reliance and exposure to Russia's exports like gas. So what has he achieved?
