I find Kiama very over rated, sure it is quite nice by the water and there is the blow hole which attracts lots of tourists but its somewhere where you would expect nice eateries but they are really lacking but still its a lot nicer than Nowra which is a hole like 1908 pointed out.

Yes i really like Port Macquarie, sounds like your stop over there wasn't the best though. I was there quite a few years ago and it was just after one of the big floods, cant remember what year it was, the river was brown and the slick going out into the ocean went for miles, we had stayed at Grassy for a few days earlier but couldn't use the beach there because logs and all sorts of debris was washed up on the beach, we were having a drink at the Zebu bar which is on the river at Port Macquarie right in town and a brown snake went slithering past on the footpath out side and this young lady jumped several metres in the air screaming, it was quite amusing to see, her feet were pedaling mid air and gave everyone sitting near the windows a good laugh.

Were actually at a nice Air bnb at Port Macquarie tonight on our way to Brisbane tomorrow.

I may or may not have retired last Monday .Have taken 6 months leave without pay with option to return if I wish .60 by then so I suspect not

I'm sort of in the same boat, have 6 months of sick leave at work which i will try to wittle down, still have plenty of long service and was even thinking of taking my long service at half pay which would take me into early next year and i really haven't plans of staying at work much longer then. Currently do 30 hrs a week, well 24 hrs one week and 36 the other but want to cut it to 20 hours depending on how long i stay, meanwhile i'm pumping my super up even more, i am hopefully planning not to be working this time next year.

IMO Kiama's pretty swish now in terms of eateries and stuff. Totally different from the Kiama I knew as a kid.

My pre-teen year were spent living in the Gong (Austinmer) and anything south of the Wollongong town centre was pretty ordinary. A mate had the best house in Kiama, but it was a low-key town with lotsa beach bums. Lotsa great memories there... his dad was a (young, fun loving) minister at the Anglican church right on the beach. Their house was an awesome old house that overlooked the beach (massive block of land). Every morning before school he'd duck down for a surf. We'd just adventure all around the block... when his dad thought we were out of sight, he'd go and do burnouts on the block in his Celica. I always had a great time in Kiama... simpler days!

In high school I moved to Sydney and I had a few friends from the north shore who would always shit on the Gong & its surrounds (anything south TBH). I literally had friends who wouldn't go away with me on holidays because we always went down south.

Ironically these days places like Kiama, Berry, Kangaroo Valley and Nowra seem to be where lotsa north shore people are choosing to have their sea/tree change (always with a bit of a brag attached). As such, I have a bit of a love / hate relationship with the area. On one hand I'm nostalgic about all the old sites and there's some decent food around the area. However, some places are beginning to feel like an extension of the north shore, which make them a bit yucky.

Where are the Morris brothers located these days BTW? Aren't they from Kiama? You could duck in and have a Cattleman's Larger with Rod Wishart and the Morris'...

Yes would love to see some different caves apart from Jenolan, i have been to Wombeyan Caves once but that was in the 70's.Yes i have heard the thermal pool isn't as warm as a lot of people think, even my brother said it was just like swimming at an ocean beach in summer temperature wise, also heard from other people saying they are generally nice and relaxed after the swim there but the walk back up the hill from the pool has you all hot and bothered again. Still looking forward to Yarrongbilly when ever i get there, definitely wouldn't be winter though.

That walk back up definitely kills the vibe of a relaxing experience. They are right though, it’s great for the muscles. We used to go there after playing footy in Cooma. It’s was a trek but good way to sooth after a game.

Hope you enjoy your trip whenever you choose to go. There’s soo much to see and do in that area.

Most likely going to Canberra in June and thought of taking a few extra days and maybe doing Yarrangobilly but i like the idea of driving from Sydney down the Hume to Gundagai then across to Tumut down to the caves then onto Bega then a nice meander up the coast back to Sydney and of course when we have warmer weather.

Great trip mate and in June you could have some amazing scenery if there’s been some snow although you will run the risk of road closures if the weather is sketchy. She’s a long drive through there and you would hate to get turned around as there aren’t many other ways through.

Hopefully the cheese factory on the way into Bega is open again after covid shut it down. If you get to Tathra, have a feed on the warf if the cafe is open and take a rod for a bit of fun. The Frigates could still be running through there and a good sized Coota are always great fun on light gear.

I think the worse part is when you lose your parents, aunts, uncles. You realise you’re the oldest generation and next in line!

Very true .Almost 60 and multiple health issues that may knick me off my perch if not cared for as like many on here and some with much worse .But still above ground and like Rented still 21 in the mind .My daughter's will attest to my teen like behaviour at times .Wiser I'm sure I am but truly hopeful for the later stage of life .Me the missus and the mutt spending time traveling and gardening .Happy times

Yes would definitely do that trip in late Spring, Summer or early Autumn , no way would i do it in Winter.
