its not 1950 anymore..most of the wives and girlfriends are more academically gifted than the men they are propping up anyway..or own their own companies like previous wives of PM's..

75 was a special case. the fact remains that last night we had a change of government and the side that lost didn't go to the courts or urge people go storm parliament house. liberal democracy is a bad system but it's better than all the other systems.

in 75 murdoch'a media was a player but these days there's so many different places to get your info that blaming the media is a pretty weak argument. blaming the 'sheeple' is also a weak argument. people are going to live their live the way they want and that's their right. better to blame leaders - they have the opportunity to explain what's going on and if the people don't listen to them well that's the leaders fault.
      I like. Nice post.

As in China (which the US Brookings institute rates the most popular government in terms of popular approval on Earth) the Party is the governing entity and only party members are eligible for election to the national congress which leaves the Sheeple out and fair enough because admission to the Party is not granted lightly, it requires a track record of service to the community over many years. Elected reps have policies and they coalesce in much the same way as parties function in other forms of government. There are 95 million members of the CCP and like the USSR they are not humanoids, they are seriously dedicated people with the best interests of the collective at heart.
Except of course the interests of the Uyhgur community.

        • The real test begins............I hope Albo ain't in for too big a shock.
I mean , people don't call him each way albo for no reason.

I wanna see him keep his election promises without blowing the budget.

Maybe he could pay to address the housing crisis and the problems in aged care by stripping back the funding to the ABC?

Construction standards have fallen alarmingly in this country ...leaning towers of cracking everywhere.

Of course it could've been that the floor was uneven, but mrs bb's one was alongside and it was fine.

            • My dream now is for Labor to govern in its own right...bypassing the Teal Independents.
Then no one much will care what they think or want.
...and the buck will stop solely with Albo and Co.

An ALP majority in the lower house is still possible. I don't get the criticisms that a 'minority' is a bad/messy thing though.

IMO we're all scarred from 2010 where (as a progressive) I'm happy to concede that the Coalition essentially won. However, a bunch of (largely) conservative independents decided to side with the ALP. Abbott then behaved like an absolute d!ckhead and did his best to make a meal out of the situation by trying to block everything (purely for political gain).

This time around it's different. In essence...

                  1. Above all, progressives have a majority. If current predictions are correct, the worst case scenario for ALP is that they'll win 75 seats. If this happens then so what? There's like 3 Greens seats and 12 independents (many of whom are progressives). Labor will either have

                  2. The Liberals NEVER have a lower house majority! They always form a minority government, then do a deal with the far-right (the Nats), who sit in their party room and strongarm them on everything, preventing any chance of them having a more progressive agenda when needed. Fark me... what does it take for Joyce to get sacked? IMO a day will come when they re-think the Coalition and start looking for alternatives.

                  3. Laws are supposed to be made in the Parliament, not in the Coalition party room. IMO this election has demonstrated that people want a Federal ICAC and they want more transparency about decision making. I don't think it's correct to suggest that... gosh... actually debating stuff properly in the Parliament and then convincing people to join you in voting for new laws is a bad thing. That's exactly how it's SUPPOSED to be! I'm personally sick of the Coalition doing everything in their party room (i.e. the Nats strong-arming the Libs into making everything more conservative + factoring in additional pork barreling measures for their supporters) and then asking a bunch of Dorothy Dixers in Parliament instead of having a proper debate / Q&A session (which are a complete insult to democracy IMO).

                  • Clearly a lot of people felt the same way - that an obdurate minority was denying reality and nothing could be done about it.

As it is, the Nats have gained ground, not lost it. Could anything more accurately illustrate the "further out the electorate, the lower the IQ" adage?
