    • Just booked 4 nights in Nelson Bay in Feb and will stay with friends on the Central Coast a night on the way up.

5 nights in Melbourne in May , will go to a Swans game down there but so much more to do.

Thinking of booking another week at Stuarts Point/ Grassy Head in March but seeing we were there in in December will think about it, where we stay has a full week vacant.

Nelson Bay and Port Stephens specifically, is probably my favourite place to visit on the coast. We dd the short Melbourne trip in 2023 and loved it. As you say there’s so much to do there. I really want to get to a Roosters home game this year and just need to decide which one. As for big trips I’m thinking of returning to the UK in late 2026 but that’s a long way off for now. I always wanted to go to Japan next but the crazy crowds and tourist boom there at the moment is really putting me off. Hopefully the PF is fully recovered by then. I feel my foot is at about 90% these days so almost there. Just hope I haven’t jinxed it by saying that. Hope your leg is improving.

Haven't been to Nelson Bay/Port Stephens since 2007 so looking forward to it, a work colleague has a holiday house there and kept on saying we could go up any time it was vacant for mates rate so in inquired into it and going now. Having a skin cancer removed from my nose late Feb so will wait to see how it goes before deciding on somewhere in March or early April while it is still warm enough.

As for overseas i;m also thinking 2026 for the UK and Italy, it will give me enough time to hopefully being over my condition at the moment and i will have a better idea finance wise because i will be fully retired by then ( i'm 99% there now ), may squeeze in a short trip to Singapore before that as there seems to be a few good deals and is not a huge flight.

I was hoping the Roosters played down in Canberra this year as i enjoy a nice short break down there when the footy is on.

          • In Vietnam right now for lunar new year. Have been running daily and found a sweet 32km route (drew it from scratch in Strava) which was largely traffic free (started at 5am and brought lotsa water). Afterwards we visited various cemeteries where our grandparents are buried - one's an awesome, purpose-built compound for commie comrades so it's pretty cool. Oh and we caught rhe new metro there too, which is neat because you avoid all the traffic (and ride above the city in parts so get some decent views).

Can't hear myself think right now as I'm in a cafe and these farking loud 'Murricans are screaming hyperactively at each other (conversing but fark they're loud and are basically piecing together bland, slapsticks one-liners into conversation... unsurprisingly the loudest one has taken on the role of the laugh-track). Granted it's not a particularly peaceful country, but the hum of scooters and Vietnamese banter all becomes a blur after a while. Whereas, these 'Murricans need to work on their indoor voices. Gawd bleyass 'Murrica, ay...

We travel here regularly and it's fun observing all the development going on. TBH my run was the best example of this as I started in my in-law's part of town (fancy & new but developed ~15 years ago), went through the main CBD, crossed a new bridge into a WIP new development area where everybody runs now (all new & fancy roads/parks/infrastructure on various lakes but incomplete & largely uninhabited), cut through an old/undeveloped area (dirt roads & all typical developing world style busted houses...etc) and then arrived back home. It makes me really happy that our family is part of this story as there's a lot going on over here. It's also a friendly / energetic place to be. Glad I've kept coming back as I'll be frank, the first time was a bit rough (and my wife struggles a bit here - she left for a reason - but is re-kindling a lot of love for it as time goes by and we grow as a family).

Side note... we went to the Cu Chi Tunnels on... Thursday I think. The tour guide joked that Vietnamese people are skinnier so can fit inside the small opening. In a mocking tone she asked if I wanted to try fitting in the hole. I slotted in quite easily, closed the lid and then used my phone's light to explore the tunnel so wasn't there when she opened the lid. A bit of a cheeky move from the Jizz-meister there, but it was pretty fun getting out and seeing a bunch of Asian/Indian tourists (who all stereotype white people as being fat & unfit) all asking me why I'm slimmer than them. I shoulda told them 'I've got a blog blog called The Chookpen's off-topic section if you wanna hear about my running achievements'

Sounds good. I hope your leg makes a full recovery. I agree it’s disappointing we don’t have a game in Canberra this year too.

                      Thanks MR

Why is it when you are only going away for 4-5 days you still end up packing way to much stuff Even with the extra room in the new car and bigger boot we are still going to end up with stuff on the back seat.

Because most people take way more than they need to when they go away

We’re guilty of that too. We were even worse when we had young kids lol! I find I always bring things ‘just in case’ and never really need them. Then I don’t learn and do the exact same thing the next time again.

                          • Ah yes packing for holidays

Back in the late 1990''s Mrs Salvo and I went to UK/Europe in winter - Mid December - 1 week in London then the package tour of Europe ( 36 days) - then Package Tour of UK ( 12 Days) and another 1 Week in London.

You had some of those optional extras where you had to dress up

It was like a military manoeuvre with Mrs Salvo packing- less is more - 1 wearing / 1 in the wash and 1 spare plus what you original wear - as Mrs Salvo said hotels can do Laundry

                            3 Pairs of Jeans
                            3 Flanno Shirts
                            3 Pairs of Undies
                            3 Pairs of Socks normal
                            3 Pairs of dress Socks
3 pairs of thermal underwear - tops and pants
                            2 Jumpers
                            1 Jacket
                            1 Beanie
                            1 Scarf
1 Suit (Pants and Jacket) with 2 Business Shirts and 2 ties in Suit bag
1 pair of Doc Martin dress Shoes

Flying out to Europe even though Summer - Jeans / Flanno shirt / Undies/ Socks and Boots and took the Jacket on the plane as carry on luggage - appropriate for Cold Weather with good insulation and tread

A small back pack with passports/ camera's / money holder pouches / traveller cheques etc

G'day Horrie I'm in the next suburb , Corlette. February is probably the pick of the time of year weather wise. And the Christmas crowds have dispersed. The water is clearing up after the recent storms so it's going to plan you've timed it well ! Make sure you have an authentic Greek meal at Atmos in Shoal Bay or the Little beach Boathouse for superb seafood. Enjoy your stay in my neck of the woods mate. Up the Roosters :-)
