Sound like fun!! I don't know how it's possible to actually sleep on a long haul flight either.

Believe me you will sleep, sometimes not restfull but you will nod off. Lucky on my trip over to the UK and the return trip from Los Angeles in 2000 was in business class ( courtesy of friend high up in Qantas at the time ) . Last trip over to the UK in 2011 was in economy but a friend who worked for Qantas frequent flyers booked us down the back of the plane and told us the flight was under sold so once we were on just spread out in a row in the middle towards the back, i had the whole back row to myself so it was very easy to sleep on that trip, Also remember when we were coming into Heathrow it was like landing on a carpet, the best softest, smoothest landing i have ever encountered.

Yes you will sleep no matter what Even with those two 160kg plus obese Germans blocking any view I had of the aisle and pinning me in my seat with no room to move I did get a few hours sleep

I’ll have to make sure I pack some earplugs as well I think. It should be interesting that’s for sure.

Oh. Again shows you I've never been on a long haul flight lol. Is this in economy class too?

If I get around to Japan - if I survive the long haul to the UK and there's enough money saved up - I plan to do the standard places there like Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, Miyajima Island, Nara etc. Sounds all very typical but since it will be my first time and all.

You will have a great time in Japan. I go there a lot because my wife is Japanese but it really is a good country to travel around. The language barrier is tough but if you are patient Japanese people are always helpful. You mentioned you know some Japanese so that will come in handy. Its also a very safe place where you don't need to overly worry about your safety.

I just put on the provided pyjamas then get a flight attendant to put the mattress on my seat before laying it flat so I can bed in between dinner and breakfast.

Ah sounds like someone flies business class. I do it from time to time. Its expensive but so nice.

Not sure how long it takes to get to Bali but NZ and Cairns were both about 3 hours. That's the longest for me. Like Horrie said it's probably a good idea to break the trip up too with a stop over.

From memory it took about 7 hours.

It depends on which capital city you are flying from or via.

It's 6 hours direct from Brisbane to Denpasar or if you are coming from Canberra you need to fly to Melbourne or Sydney for a connecting flight. Those are in the 8 to 9 hour range.

I've never been myself but have been to Thailand back in the 90's. I prefer to visit cold climates with museums, galleries etc as I'm biased towards our very own eastern suburbs water, beaches, bays and cliff walks.

My youngest Daughter is training to be a pilot and wants to do International. we will be entitled to massive discounts, but my fear of flying may get in the road. Don't get me wrong I have done it a fair few time but hate it immensely.

You will have a great time in Japan. I go there a lot because my wife is Japanese but it really is a good country to travel around. I still know some basic Japanese but unfortunately have forgotten a lot of it. I think I’d be able to pick it up fairly quickly though, well enough for a travelling tourist’s needs anyway. They are such a polite and patient culture. I remember someone telling me how they had just arrived in Japan on a JAL flight and how calm, efficient and polite the service was. That they were so genuine in wanting to help you and it was such a pleasure. Japan is such a wonderful mix of ancient culture and modern engineering and technology. I really hope I can get there one day.

Well that’s twice as long as I’ve ever been on a plane. The longest single trip for me is about 3 hours but when you combine it with a connecting flight from home it would be around 4 hours tops in one day!
