  • The Republic of Australia

The Republic of Australia...or The Socialist Republic of Australia, or The Peoples Republic of Australia?
with Albo as the first President?

Albo has appointed an Assistant Minister For The Republic.
Sole purpose to get Australia to become a Republic.
Red bandana Pete is over the moon with joy, reportedly.
Gee, Labor kept that quiet during the election campaign.

Oh well, the People of Australia will decide at a referendum.
I'll be voting NO to a Republic ...I like that politicians have to swear allegiance to the Monarch and follow the current Constitution, not just do as they please.

I'm for a republic, but 'president' wouldn't replace the PM. The GG would simply be re-named to 'president'. as he wouldn't be signing shit off on behalf of the crown.

Don't think Labor's got any sort of a mandate to put forward a republic though. IMO they need to avoid too much reform in their first term so that their vote doesn't get destroyed at the next election (like in 2010).

It's no from me as well.
I don't see the problem in being part of the Commonwealth..........we are not like America.
Plus I see changing everything officially as a colossal waste of money.

stupid to have an english person as our head of state.
other than getting rid of a foreign monarch there wouldn't be much change. australia would be no more or less socialist than it currently is, and there's no chance we'd leave the commonwealth - it's already got lots of republics like india and south africa.
the independence of australia has been labor policy for a long time so no dramas there.

I you like reggae look to what Barbados have just done and become a republic. Even King Charles was in attendance at the ceremony. He doesn’t have to come to ours, nor his son.
The Caribbean nation parts ways with the Queen in a ceremony attended by Prince Charles and Rihanna.

The Conga Line of Empty heads is up and dancing on this thread. These are part of the 50% who, at any opportunity inflict the self serving rich on us though they have the arse out of their daks.

Currently, at their idiot connivance, we are a possible/probable target in a thermonuclear war for our support of US global primacy. They also voted against reform of the property market in favour of property investors with tax breaks rather than in the interests of their own kids/grandkids. Too lazy to think for themselves, we have to put up with second hand Murdoch drivel.

The Sheeple are everywhere with little interest in anything except that which is easily understood but this particular conga line, while sharing the propensity to ignorance of the others, are nonetheless militant in the interests of the rich. They're ones who get us into wars - see the drunken fools who traipsed over to Vietnam a few years back to "commemorate the Long Tan myth and were, to their dismay, promptly sent packing or the other yobs who invade Turkey every year expecting the Turks to share their misplaced sentimentality.
